had the new engine running once, got a timing gun now, got some advice on here last night, but the bloody thing wont start anymore.

It turns, and as it nearly fires, theres a loud crunch/bang and the engine rocks as it nearly comes to life.

Pulled out all the plugs, 1 and 4 had a tiny bit of dark oil on them. 2 and 3 were absolutely thick with engine oil. I have 2 possible ideas

1 The rocker cover gasket I got with the new engine, turned out to be the wide one, I knew it wasnt sealed properly, and some oil was coming out the side, but put it on and got the engine running for 30 secs. Got the new thinner correct gasket last night and fitted that. So oil has either came out of the rocker cover and down the sides of no 2 and 3 plugs.

or

2 something is seriously wrong in the engine, but if there was something wrong, wouldnt the oil be on all 4 plugs?

any advice or ideas gladly welcomed

i doubt its because of the rocker gasket unless your plugs were loose (otherwise how would the oil get from the rocker gasket to the tip of he plugs)

valve stem oil seals or rings

but it might not be anything too serious if you get it running and give it a good run out, if engines been stood for ages

cant really comment too much without seeing it

me too i always proberlly over tighten mine as i do with everything

i was forever stripping threads on my pushbike wheel nuts

and my first week at work i cracked a sump on a hgv wagon by over tightening it

i thought they were joking about it for about a year lol

thats a common pinto cam cover gasket leaking fault the oil sits around the plugs and has you undo them it seeps down the threads  i see this on a daily basis its nothing to worry about check yer points aint closed up od the plastic striker on the points has'nt melted and closed the gap. if its has you have the wrong coil that cause's the points striker to melt . another common fault

its too much on the tip of the plug i agree with caprinerd

Looking at the pic and the ammount of oil around the plug socket i would say its coming from the gasket............ unless of course you dip your plug sockets in oil before using them :lol:

this makes sense to me, I think it was a 15mm gasket I used, it sort of nearly fit, but I used it as a temorary measure, I know for sure it leaked cos it ran onto the manifold and smoked when it ran.

99% sure then, that some of the oil where it leaked in the centre has gone and sat on plugs 2 and 3, then when I removed them, its ran down the plugs as they were lifted from the holes. The engine ran ok at the weekend and the plugs were not covered in oil then.

I'll get some new plugs at the weekend, turn over the engine without the plugs in and get all the plug holes cleaned. The new 9mm gasket fits perfect so theres no more leaks, fingers crossed it'll run again then I can set the timing with the gun I borrowed and then go for a play

im only trying to help the lad

im entitled to my King opinion and my answer

to get oil like that the plugs must have been loose or hes taken 20 mins a plug to remove to allow oil on

plus steve was ther a puddle of oil around the plugs where they sit before you removed them

if yes then youve answered your own question, that way it saves clever turds like wpe trying to take the piss out of my answers :thumbsup:

just noticed on the engine, I can see oil on the top of the outer ring where the plug goes in, so it must have came in from above

better man up and admit to our lass she was right
