the shonkster Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 has been asked before how do i know what diff i have in mk2 escort plus pulling up to a juction today had a grinding noise the car stopped suddenly at a very low speed moved in gear backwards & forwards the limped home all this noise came from back of car
moredoorAsh Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 If you meen English or Atlas the the English diff unit bolts in from the front,ie where the prop bolts to and an Atlas has a removable plate which you get to from the rear of the vehicle. As for the Ratios i wouldn't have a clue, i've not got that clever yet As for the noise an inspection is deff required there my friend
GT_lenny Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 jack the car up unbolt the prop and see if you can turn the diff flange by hand it should turn nice and smooth(make sure the hand brakes off) if its very stiff or locks up at any point then yes its fooked to work out the ratio you idealy need to remove the diff and count the teeth on the crownwheel (big one) and pinion (littler one thats inline with the prop) divide the number of teeth on the crownwheel by the amount of teeth on the pinion-thats your ratio OR.... if the diff actually turns by hand whilst in the axle still get some one to hold one of the roadwheels still whilst you turn the flange count how many turns of the flange equates one turn of the roadwheel and that will give you a rough idea
