RFChris Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 wat does the rat look mean steve Rat look is all about having a cool old car that is mechanicaly tip top, while externally it looks rough. Its a big look on old VeeDubs, some guys even strip doen to the metal, let some surface rust build up and then varnish it! Basically dings and dents are cool surface rust is cool bad paint is cool so on and so forth.....
Mr Sam Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 ankor wax my fiestas had a coat of the old ankor wax amazing stuff ill be a bit more ratty when i get round to lowering it
105Nick Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 I'm loving that pick up, a crew cab splittter passed me last night scraping the deck. I really want to keep the Anglia as a ratter as its in its original 42 year old sunbleached blue paint with a few patches of rust but it needs new panels, virtually the whole front excl the bonnet, the rear panel, arches and quarters so I think it'd loose its effect, needs new door pillars I'm suspecting too .... was thinking about spraying it and then lightly going over it with wire wool? wiould that look okay? Just be cool to keep as much of it as original as possible - dont see many with original paint. I've sprayed the engine ancilliaries tho, and engine will be original green, looks stunning. Might have to slam it after that, but I think the ammount of bits that need replacing will warrant a full respray and resto. The Mk2 isn't really what I'd call a rat though, its prefferably pre 70s, original patinad paint ie sun bleached and polished almost down to the primer, the odd rust patch, but preferably as original as possible rather than mis matched panels, original trim, slammed on top notch suspension and most likely with a tuned period motor, south London stylee for fords, but with the addition of beaten up bodywork and rust patches it adds significantly to the fun factor when you leave jap crap for dead.
105Nick Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 In the mag I work for, we had someone build a kit bike chopper, I'm sure you're aware they weigh in around £12,000, which looked awesome. The guys left the frame bare and spent days spraying it with water before letting it sit at different angles so a healthy dose of rust gathered, then laquered over the rust. Too new to be a rat but it was different. We've featured loads of beaten up 40s & 50s Harleys lately that ahve been done in a rat/bobber style which works well, one which keeps winning best paint too, which is odd as it looks like it's been sat on a scrapper for the last 60 years, but the guy rubbed iit dowwn let some rust gather, sprayed it, rubbed it down and coated it in old engine oil, laquered it rubbed it down and repeated the process. Looks really cool compared to all the bling type OCC bikes.
Super Sh1te Box Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 Original paint and patina looks awsome and agresive, think that it could start to catch on in OSF world as been massive over last 5 years on hot rod and VM scene, rules tend to be earlier and rarer the better, massive dose of lowering, rare of well painted wheels, rock solid (replacement panels if needed) are painted but with matting agent and then rust look coulors over the top also they use lots of paint thinners and elbow grease to go through layers of paint before heavey amounts of either clear laquer or just lots of good quality wax applied on regular basis and then just clean it with water to keep shine. Still loads of work and have to be tidy and be able to suprise boy racers in their "lax power" style cars.
