72mk1escort Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 what is the best engine assembly sealant/sealer to use I am putting my freshly bored cross flow together with all new gaskets from burtons and ive ordered a competition sump gasket and just wanted to know what sealer to use as a secondary precaution as its always leaked from the sump. i will also use it on both sides of the paper gaskets which is what ive always done to prevent leaking just need to know what the best sealer is as i dont want to waste my money. Ive heard good things about Hylomar and burtons sell that? any info would be greatly appreciated cheers guys
X FLOW EDDY Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 My old man swears by STAG WELLSEAL . He did all his mini cooper engines with it and they never leaked.
Tom Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 Don't use sealant on cork gaskets though as they squash out when tightened
Fiesta Steve Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 As Tom says, I don't use any apart from a tiny bit where the cork and rubber ends meet and never had any leaks. Make sure you torque it correctly, if you just do it by hand and guess it will be too tight and leak oil !!
caprinerd Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 bath sealent used it for years as do the stock car boys and the banger boys as well
Tom Posted August 11, 2010 Report Posted August 11, 2010 Most of time I use a bit of spray glue (on paper and cork gaskets) but its a twunt to get off again though!
72mk1escort Posted August 12, 2010 Author Report Posted August 12, 2010 Im using the competition sump gasket from burtons for the sump can i put sealer either side of that or is there no need?
Davewrc Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 I would only only use a light smear of grease to seal it and some holomar in the corners where the rubber strips go over the front and rear covers.
72mk1escort Posted August 13, 2010 Author Report Posted August 13, 2010 Burtons are out of stock of Hylamar any ideas of any other places that sell it guys
Nuttynil Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 i am sure halfords sell it dont need to use much just a light smear
kingstreetjon Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 You need to forget all that ancient stuff, times have changed, i work on modern engines every day and i use a grey high build sealer made by vauxhall, it comes in half length tubes to go in a cartridge gun. You can use it with pressed tin sumps without the gaskets, it sets like flexible rubber and i've never had a leak yet. As long as you leave it to set for twelve hours you'll have no problems at all. I've built a lotus twincam engine recently and used it on the front cover and the sump with zero leaks which is unheard of.
Mick The Cabbie Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 I've never had any probs using general use clear silicone sealer in a cartridge gun. That Vauxhall stuff sounds intriguing tho..
