what is the best engine assembly sealant/sealer to use I am putting my freshly bored cross flow together with all new gaskets from burtons and ive ordered a competition sump gasket and just wanted to know what sealer to use as a secondary precaution as its always leaked from the sump.

i will also use it on both sides of the paper gaskets which is what ive always done to prevent leaking just need to know what the best sealer is as i dont want to waste my money.

Ive heard good things about Hylomar and burtons sell that?

any info would be greatly appreciated cheers guys :D

As Tom says, I don't use any apart from a tiny bit where the cork and rubber ends meet and never had any leaks.

Make sure you torque it correctly, if you just do it by hand and guess it will be too tight and leak oil !!

I would only only use a light smear of grease to seal it and some holomar in the corners where the rubber strips go over the front and rear covers.

You need to forget all that ancient stuff, times have changed, i work on modern engines every day and i use a grey high build sealer made by vauxhall, it comes in half length tubes to go in a cartridge gun. You can use it with pressed tin sumps without the gaskets, it sets like flexible rubber and i've never had a leak yet. As long as you leave it to set for twelve hours you'll have no problems at all. I've built a lotus twincam engine recently and used it on the front cover and the sump with zero leaks which is unheard of.
