with the mk1, I have been trying to fit 40s to this for weeks now and its driving me mad :x

This has not been an easy install for me, like me stupidly buying a facet silver top pump and then having to figure out how to fit it to a positive earth car without it shorting out in the boot,

I have spoken to a few weber dealers and they tell me the jetting is there or there abouts, I have had them serviced by a very knowledgeable chap and had the dizzy set to suit but I still cant get them right :?

I have been meticulous in the basic set up from my book, but when I give it the beans it dies off and nearly puts me through the screen :( .

It pissed me right off last week when I missed the mk1 show and after most of today on it I have cleaned all me tools and given up on it.

It looks like my only option is to take it to the tuners and that cost me over £300 for the mk2 when I took that in to be done :( I am getting fed up with all the money its costing me and am seriously considering get rid of it and cutting my losses :(

How can something that looks so good cause so much grief.

i think we all get a bit like this sometimes mate when the old things are giving grief!! Sounds like it needs to get set up on the rollers but as you say its not cheap, you will be back in love with it when she running sweet and the sun is shinning off her!

Hello Jiffer, leave it alone for a few weeks. I've had a few infuriating moments with mine over the last 15 years. It sounds like an ignition fault to me. What set up are you running?

hope you get it sorted m8,the carbs look really tight tho on the manifold?sure they should'nt be like that tho with thackery(sp) washers etc and gaskets fitted up.a decent rolling road session with someone who knows his carbs will sort that in no time

Its a beztek set up, with no vac advance and curved for the 40s

proper set up and tuning is an often overlooked expense in engine modification but its the most wothwhile money i've ever spent on any of my cars - when got the cortina on the road i'd fitted the right sized jets and i thought it ran pretty well- first run up on the dyno revealed it was leaning off at the top end and only making about 60rwbhp, a bit of fettling by the tuner and it was nice n rich at the top end and making a strong 140rwbhp, like i say - best money i've spent on it so far trouble is a lot of rolling road guy nowadays dont want to know if its carbed if you willing to trailer it a little way i can strongly reccomend this guy-proper old skool tuner :ykt::thumbsup:

they have a new set of the gaskets and thackery washers and have a nice amount of movement (I fell into that trap with the 40s on the mk2)

the chap I use is a seasoned chap in his late 50s and cut his teeth on webers ( and looks forward to them) so I have no doubt in his talent, but its the cost all the time

tbh, get them set up properly.....

ive had 40's 45's on my old pinto, and 45's on the zetec i have now...

and the difference they make when properly setup is huge!

:) you've spent to get it that far, spend a little more and itll give you a lot more!

Think of the cost as a weekend away from the GG's mate

:D I dont allways lose just most of the time. not been out today so theres half a bag I've saved :D

but on a serious note who said these cars have to be so bloody hard :?

or is it just me and mine

Sounds like you have the wrong jets in the carbs

Its over fueling or lacking fuel at a certain rev.

Rolling road tune will fix it and gain some more HP at the same time

I also have a Bestek system...plug and play

Check the amplifier to dizzy connections. I have a Bestek system and once had one of the three wire pushed back in the connector so it wasn't making proper contact and it gave me similar problems. By the way, they are superb systems!..It is sparking on all 4? Compression Ok on all 4?

Whats your fuel pressure? Don't give up, it will be something simple (which makes it all the more annoying!)

getting good spark on all, when I checked compression a while back they were all good and fairly equal (cant remember the numbers now, so might check again later, to early now) fuel pressure is bang on 2.5, tried it lower and higher but no different.

it purrs like a kitten at idle,

Just done a compression test:

1, 190psi

2, 180psi

3, 185psi

4, 185psi

dont know if this is right for a 1500 prex flow

when I had the plugs out they were a bit black and sooty?

Compression figures seem very good and the jetting looks to be bang on using this as a reference:

Is it still a positive earth set-up?

Also, it would be pretty easy to undo the tops of the carbs and check the float level and if the floats themselves have fuel in. If they aren't airtight that will cause problems as they don't float(!)

yes still positive earth but dizzy built to suit

the floats are new plastic ones and the 40s been serviced.

made my decision with it now

chokes: 30mm

idle jet: 45F9

emullsion tube: F15

main jet: 115

air corrector: 150

pump jet: 40

What sort of power figure are you expecting to get? is it a standard engine etc?

if I keep it long enough to get it sorted I would love to see 90-95bhp.

I have done an immence amount of work to this engine and thought the 40s would be the crowning glory, but now considering the cost I wish I had stuck with the original gt carb.

I have been through everything else and have come to think its the set up on the carbs. I'm going to speak to a chap tommorow about putting it on the rolling road, depending what he says is the deciding factor if it stays or goes, it doing in my head seeing it there undriveable.

Main jet size..........Venturi size x 4

30mmx4 is 120

Air corrector...........Main jet size + 50

120+50 is 170

Change the main jet size and air corrector to 120 and 170 like above.

Do this first and take to HT Racing.

If you think your car in undrivable you should see mine
