1.8 head on 1.6 pinto?

I got told from someone the other day who knew a previous owner of my car that it used to have a 1.8 head on it. I know it takes the wider rocker cover gasket. Am i right in thinking 86- took the wider type?

 

But how can I check if it's a 1.8? and what would have been the point in doing it in the first place?
