Tidying up the outside of a barn ? Moving in Tomorrow

I'm looking for some ideas to tidy up the outside of a barn.

 

I'm not sure what it's made of yet, it could be asbestos or a concrete mix like the newer ones are.

 

A new roller door is one on the list but looking at replacing or covering the outside to make it look more homely

 

 

Also looking at lining and insulating the inside to make it warmer and quieter.

if they are asbestos cement sheets your options are limited there was a slight down grading alowing removel to be carried out via a method statement / risk assesment and not specialits but there is a large amount of it there and will be costly to dispose of.

you could over clad it but that thows up more problems as in getting a fixing because you would need to drill the sheets.

if you do go for box profile sheeting you will need to insulate or it is likely to condensate.

So ........... is it ok to paint the outside and do you have to use a speacil paint etc.

 

 

 

The frame is wood, so was thinking of lining it with plastic then insulating it with either loft insulation or celotext and boarding it with ply or similar ?

if you are to use loft insulation then best to have a vapour barrier or go for cavity batts as they are resin impregnated. best to try get some seconds of polyurethane sheets.

dont know about paint for the external sheets but tread carefull when cleaning and prep.

We put a offer on the property yesterday as we lost the sale of another house we were buying, the barn is in the back garden, missus says i could keep it if i make it look nicer !!!!

 

It also has this next to the barn, but that will have to be taken down to give us a garden

Looking at the way its constructed and the ageing off the sheets i would say its asbestos though only becomes a risk if its broken or as said earlier drilled , any exterior paint would be ok i usually use oil based undercoat if im going to seal any so it doesnt dust up and stops the kids from touching it then putting there fingers in there mouths , itll be expensive to have it removed though if done by a firm you can do it yourself and take it to a tip as long as its double bagged ..

Little update:

 

We've had a offer accepted and should be in for Xmas

 

 

Because we have had to go a littl higher on the price, it doesn't look like i'll be doing too much to the barn for the time being, unless i get some mega cheap prices !!!

 

We have said i'll keep the double garage for a couple of years until we have saved some more cash to get it how we wanted, hopefully i can do the odd job in there and eventually jack in my rented workshop.

 

It was too good a chance to turn down and probably most peoples dream, definatly mine, to have a barn in the back garden to play in !!!!

 

I will feel happier stripping off the abestos and cladding it in timber or metal at a push, and insulating and boarding inside.

 

Any help on materials and cheap places to buy could be helpful and if anyone fancies a barn stripping party at some time ........ let me know !!!!

yeah and you need an old tyre pressure chart , i think i got one from the 80's knocking about with all the pressures for escorts and old skool cars will see if i can dig it out

plastic is alot easier to fit than timber , if you need a hand grab the upvc and i can always come over and do it for ya , just need to run some 2" timber beams then pin the cladding to it the if you want to you can also chuck a bit of insulation in between the gaps too

Well i'm sat in my old house this evening with only a couple of chairs and a bed

 

Everything is packed and in the removal truck and this time tomorrow i will have the new house with the barn just outside the door

You could smarten the outside of that barn by carefully attaching some wood batterns and clad it in feather edge board, or if you feeling flush some log board. Neither is a cheap option, but it would look far far better, and is cheaper than starting again, ie demolition and a new shed., plus visually will win brownie points with er indoors.

Been in since Tuesday, loads to do in the house found out we have no complete working bathroom, something broke in all 3 of them, heating packed up last night, no proper internet yet until tomorrow, needed a good clean throughout ......... but kids love it and so do we so another project house, we said we wouldn't do it again plans already to extend and change it around

 

 

Once i get the house functioning i will be out starting on the barn, should be after Xmas !!!!!
