Andrade Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 sorry for the thousand posts lately, but i'm trying to get the project in full swing to get the car assembled by early next year, then send it off to paint. I want to have it ready by xmas 2011 hopefully So, im not really an ECU guru, however came across this and can't figure out why the price is so cheap compared to omex and DTA? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Complete-Megajolt ... 204wt_1139 Wandered if anyone uses these successfully on a zetec and what kind of performance they get? Does it have an output for the rev counter? Shift light? It's for use with this engine:
radar tech Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 if you can hold a soldering iron , i suggest that you buy the kit from autosport labs in the states. all you need on top of the kit is a coil pack and edis 4 module. I am using it on my zetec & it started first turn of the key which suprised me . the instructions for kit assembly on the autosport labs website are REALLY simple. you solder a bit up then test it . if it works then onto the next stage. It only take about one hour to assemble at a steady pace. As for the teacho output, i am using a standard 6 clock dash in my escy and you just put the live feed to the coil pack through the induction loop in the back of the rev counter. There are loads of maps available online and its dead easy to change maps. hope this helps for starts, if you need any more gen don't hesitate to ask
Ken B Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 For the sake of £120+ shipping, buy one already done. Then you got someone to blame if it dont work. http://www.autosportlabs.com/megajolt-lite-p-41.html
GT_lenny Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 buy one done- you still have to make up the loom but the instructions supplied with it are very good got mine from here http://trigger-wheels.com/store/contents/en-uk/d28.html after sales is very good too
Andrade Posted November 17, 2010 Author Report Posted November 17, 2010 Has anyone tried using these instead of the ford EDIS module? I tried contacting MSD directly to see if they can provide some information. http://www.msdignition.com/info.aspx?taxid=4&taxid2=108
Andrade Posted November 17, 2010 Author Report Posted November 17, 2010 Seems like these modules can control the timing whilst increasing the spark given off + multiple sparks at the lower revs. I have read through the installation instructions and there are inbuilt rev limiting features, tach output, and shiftlight is mentioned too. Also they do not replace the EDIS module only, they replace both module and ECU. "According your question, yes you can use the DIS-2 without the need for other ECU."
quickrack Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 Do you need the carbs to have a potentiometer fitting on em, then??? Or are they totally seperate, and cable operated carbs will work with Megajolt anyway??
emu Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 The megajolt can be set up to use either a throttle position sensor or a Manifold pressure sensor as its load input. I've got one of the really early ones sat here that I built up and installed in my previous car. I know that the new versions are a bit more complicated than the old ones, but the basic principles are still the same. I vaguely remember putting it together in about an hour. Its been sat in the garage for the last 5 years, but I plugged it into the computer with a cheapie USB -serial adaptor and it still seems to still work ok. Can adjust, load and save maps to it ok. So i'm going to sling a carb back on my pinto and see if I an get the system up and running again. I think Tom has one to run his XE, and there are a few other people who have got their cars up and running on one too.
Andrade Posted November 17, 2010 Author Report Posted November 17, 2010 Do you need the carbs to have a potentiometer fitting on em, then???Or are they totally seperate, and cable operated carbs will work with Megajolt anyway?? Thinking about it no TPS was mentioned in the documentation, so I believe this unit is not 3d mappable. I'll pay a visit to my local mechanic and do some brain storming on what units he generally uses in these cases. Though a considerable amount of engine transplants has taken place in our garage not many were distributorless. At the time being I'm just digging around to see what options are available, for the time being megajolt seems to be the best unit
petrolhead Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 yes, megajolt is 3D, you have to specify whether you want TPS or MAP sensors. You can us it without which would be a 2D system but theoretically still better than a dizzy. They do represent very good value for money. I had one and I'll be honest and say it was great when it worked but developed a fault that I couldn't trace. It was probably down to my wiring or soldering. Tom does have megajolt, Properly installed and his has been very good for years and dyno'd to give very good reults.
quickrack Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Great. Will go for MAP sensor so. I will use the Dizzy for now and swop over to megajolt or whatever when i get some money!
Craigorypeck Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 The Megajolt is prob the best value for money and a great system to use! I'll post a link of my install on my pinto, might help- prob not! I'll be swapping it over to my NA YB very soon. The TPS version is actually easier to install, webcon do a proper fit bracket that sits on the side and a pot that fits on first day with no issues. The MAP version needs all the inlet manifold runners tapped into and fed to a reservoir to give a proper reading. I bought 3 unassembled from the US built them all, sold 2, actually made money on it that paid for the crank wheel trigger and the edis unit and coil pack. The v4 version I got has loads of output options- can advance the timing during a cold start so the engine revs higher, has output for tacho, has a rev limiter (so worth the extra few $!) and has 4 shift light outputs so you can have a disco going on. You can also input a signal from a lambda probe and data log sessions. This will be very useful when getting my bike carbs set up.. You can also wire a switch to flip between 2 different maps, one for pishy tesco juice and one for high octane, very handy in an everyday/trackday car. Only problem with the megajolt is getting your laptop (if it doesn't have a rs232??? socket) to communicate via usb.. I bought 3 adaptors before it worked! The autosportslabs website has a great community with loads of peeps very willing to help out! 3D mapping is defo the way forward if your up for a bit of fettling??! For me, easily the best option! http://www.autosportlabs.org/viewtopic.php?t=2646
