is there any tel tale signs of a 1600x-flow being out of a mex as apposed to anything else? or is split the engine down to measure valve sizes etc?

most original mex engines were 711m blocks so have a look on the side ,and the number should be there

for what ive been offerd it for its imertirial rely but he did say it come out of a mex a few years ago

And it should have ( if its been taken from a mk1 mex ) the heavy duty altanator brackit that fixes to a point on the side of the block up near the water pump.
