72mk1escort Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 hey guys been offered an unused crossflow cylinder head machined and ported etc by Paul Fisher its never been used and is un run still has the preserving oil on it. the work carried out is as follows: work was carried out by Paul fisher as you would except too a very very high standard, work includes new inlet and exhaust valves the sizes are inlet 41.2mm and exhaust 34.5mm, bronze valve guides, double valve springs etc. the price is £400 just wondered if its a good deal also does bronze valve guides mean it can run on unleaded.
Toby Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 £400 is ok for a well modified cylinder head. I'm not familiar with Paul Fisher - does his stuff go well? Bronze Guides just mean the guides will last longer than running the valves straight in the head material - they should help pull some heat out of the valves too but will have no bearing on running unleaded. Usually you match valve springs to the cam you want to run, you don't want to run springs any more powerfull than you need for a given cam profile putting unnecessary pressure (wear) on the follwers and cam. Likewise you don't want them too weak to avoid valve bounce. So on one hand it's good value but it might not be everything you want - a set of Kent valve springs could set you back somewhere around £80 depending on spec. Who is selling it? Can you find out what springs are in it?
72mk1escort Posted December 20, 2010 Author Report Posted December 20, 2010 I think im gonna give it a miss the guy brought it off another guy but he assures me the head is a work of art etc but he does not know if its been converted for unleaded which worries me
caprinerd Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 all i can find at the mo is that he was an engine shop apprentice for BRM somewhere between 1946 and 1977 or he built boat engines thats about all i can find so far
Jiffer Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 I have meet him and seen some of his work mainly lotus twin cams, pre xflows and xflows. he does do some very good work and realy does now his stuff, before I went down the st route for my mk2 cortina I had him lined up to do me a xflow but was a bit pricey in the end. if I was looking for a well made head I think I might be tempted with that.
jayson2.3pinto Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 make sure its not worn out you are better of speaking to steve at vulcans
Davewrc Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I would put another £100 quid odd to it and have a new one from vulcan. That way you know exactly what you are getting and its unleaded.
