Whats the cut off year for tax exempt cars?

Yes 1973 is correct but the car has to be built before Jan 1st 1973 but can be registered later.

as above the car must be built before 1/1/73 if the car is registered after this an you can prove that it was built before 1/1/73 using the vin number you can then apply for historic tax

Build date chart could also be in the Burton catalogue I seem to remember if you have one, not sure from which year catalogue they started to put it in there though.

 

Also of note. The DVLA will grant exemption to any car first registered within the first week of january 1973 as I understand it
