i cant see anything wrong with kids training in martial arts, in boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and muai thai kids start fighting at the age of 5, but there is no punching or kicking to the head and it is on a semi contact basis.

i started martial arts at the age of 6. had fights all then time, ref and medical staff at every event. never been hurt, i have seen worse things on a football pitch.

what is wrong though is the adults. they should be shouting encouragement not shouting for blood, thats what makes it look worse than it is.

My boy has been doing full contact Tae Quan Do for 20 years now, taught him discipline confidence and self control, same as hundreds of other kids every weekend, it's just that this event has attracted national publicity, Schoolboy scramble (motocross that he also did) gets a bit competitive as well, should we be nanny state and stop it all?

Ive done karate for years and as above you learn respect self disapline and control same with any martial art if trained properly makes you better balanced person.Sparring in your clubs one thing, pub with drunks egging the lads on is another and its this i dont agree with. Yes it was controlled yes there was a ref an medics there but still shouldnt have been allowed. Let em spar in there club with sobber folks encouraging them.

I don't have a problem with the kids "grappling" as there was no punching etc ... the problem I see with that vid clip is the adults all standing around goading them ... not the right atmosphere/environment for a kids "martial arts" competition ... what were the parents thinking :?

I have 3 brothers and we beat the crap out of eachother as often as we could! One of my brothers launched a dart at me and it was sticking out of my arm! Our Dad decided to light a fire down our field and one of my brothers jumped it with his bike so we said "that was good, do it again!!" Off he went to get a good run up so we moved the ramp!!!! Yes you guessed it he landed in the fire and survived!!! On another occasion we convinced him to ride his bike dowm the stairs and he split his head open on the wall!! He use to steal my bike so i slackened the wheel nuts on the front wheel and he knocked two teeth out and grazed his chin!! I jumped out of the apple tree on to the stallions back and it took off with me hanging off it and it stood on my head and took a bit of my scalp with it!! My brother was racing up and down the field with a motorbike and i was playing chicken running over the field in front of him and he got me flat out!! We had an old pram chassis so we took it to the hill in our village and my brothers put me in it and let me go and i got stuck under the coal wagon!! We all survived it as we are 50,48,46 and 44 years old now !! yes i lost an eye and my oldest brother as a big scar under his eye and Derek lost a finger and Mike got away scott free but we would not change growing up for the world!!:wink:
