mk1super Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 Its getting toward that time to respray my escort and ive a concern. Ive seen a couple of cars painted in the new water based paints and the paints always seem to crack in the gutter rail after no time at all. One car hasnt even been on the road or driven yet (its still being rebuilt) and its got cracks there too so im guessing thats this cracking in the paint isnt down to the stress and strains a shell takes on the road. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any way of preventing this? Why didnt the cars orginal factory paint not crack in this way?
PaulMags Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 It s all down to the preperation thats why its cracking. If a car has been based up with the colour and not laquered straight away that will cause it.could be the way its prepared, theres always a reason for it.If the colour has become damp that will cause it.just got to make sure its rubbed down proper and the conditions are right.
Skoty Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 im not a fan of water based to be honest, but it is all down to prep and with the water based paints the prep work seems to have to be of a higher quality.

I think water paint was just a waste of time introducing.you still have to use a solvent clear coat so what was the point.I've never used water based paint yet and i dont really want to.I'm still using solvent in my workshop thank fook.
mk1super Posted January 29, 2012 Author Report Posted January 29, 2012 My cars gonna need bare metaled anyways its all micro blistered Ive a feeling the resprays gonna hurt my wallet alot
mr zefect Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 Been painting with water base for over 15 years never had a prob only in the early days when they first bought it out but i find it easer than solvent doesent ring up or pickle i find that prep doesent have to be as fussy as solvent.
