Right the time has come for me to get a new TV. My faithful 9 year old plasma is having issues with turning itself off

Having been nearly a decade since I last went shopping it seems technology has moved on a bit. When I got my plasma there wasn't much choice but now the shelves are packed with different models.

What I need to know is which is regarded the best at the moment, plasma/lcd/led? Having looked around the shops the picture quality on all new models are superior to my old plasma, which gives off so much heat it puts my radiators to shame! I'm looking for a 50 inch (chavvy I know) so does this make a difference to what I go for? I'm not looking to break the bank, (I'm still recovering from what my current TV cost 9 years back  ) somewhere around £700 seems to give a decent range of TV's to choose from. Any insight or advice would be appreciated. If my TV turns off by itself again it's going through the window.

Depends what you want from a TV.

Size, 3D, wall mounted, inbuilt speakers? viewing angle...

If it's for your kids to watch TV on while they eat their tea, you could bag a 42" LCD for around 4-500 pounds.

If you're looking to go down the AV route with 7.1 speakers etc etc, then you really need to ask the question on an avforum.

Good luck!

depends what your looking for but i would say a trip to curry's or somewhere to see what you prefer the look of. The staff are always helpfull and you can always check prices online after choosing a tv anyway! I like sony bravia picture quality, specs etc comes with 5 year manufacture warranty some others do too not sure which tho and i have a friend that prefers samsung and another that likes his panasonic but in my opinion if you buy a panasonic, lg, sony, samsung or similar well known brands they are all god tv's its down to personal preference and needs! but all u need is 1080p full HD 3D if thats what ur after and the rest is your choice!

Cheers guys. I went to currys to have a look at what was available. The only thing I came away with was a headache! :banghead: After many hours of wandering round in cirlces and internet searches I think I've decided on a 1080p 51inch samsung plasma.

I was told (rightly or wrongly) that plasma would be better for gaming as the refresh rate is better, and that samsung are currently the ones to have ?

Have to admit I still think the picture is sharper with LCD and colours are deeper but I use the TV more for my PS3 than I do watching TV so plasma it is!

Thanks for the advice

You might get the odd good bit of advice but the last place I'd go to is dixons or other high street TV stores for advice. They're there to sell you the most expensive item they can.

Set a budget, be realistic about TV size (don't get a 51" if your room is 6ft square).

Avforums.com - post on there for advice.

That was generally my thought but the guy at Currys was as helpful as possible. He actually pointed me to the low-mid range priced TVs

even though I told him I wasn't on a budget. Maybe it was his last day there  All sorted now, cheers chaps!
