Hi chaps

Took the mk1 out for a drive last night was going down a nice dark country road and i lost all my dipped headlights my sidelights still work and flash works but no dipped head and therefore no main beam either.

ive check the switch and the switch is ok i have got power at the switch end but not at the end where it enters the fuse box if i bridge the connection to a live one of the fuse panel the dipped head lights come on so it must be a problem between the headlamp switch and fuse panel.

Im pretty sure all cars have a relay for the dipped headlights/main beam just wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction before i start pulling the car apart lol

I did try to read the wiring diagram in the haynes manual but i got a head ache after about 5 mins

any help would be much appreciated.

It will probably be the fuse or fuse holder, mine does the same if you rotate the ceramic fuse they come on.

Once i get it on the road (or before) im going to remove the fuse box and clean it all up, mines been parked for nearly 3 years now

Ive checked that mate :( cleaned all connections and put new fuses in whole fuse panel, still not joy

there seems to be no power at the end of the loom which connects to the fuse panel but the switch is sending power down thats what makes me think there is a relay somewhere under the dash or something

Try the bulkhead plug then, or the connections on the back of the fusebox inside the car.

ive tried the plugs on the back of the fuse box is there a plug on the gromet part that goes through the bulkhead then?

just been out and tried that mate no joy run a bit of wire from the back of the switch plug to the fuse back of the correct connection on the back of the fuse panel and got all the lights back dipped and main beam and so i guess i will jus run a new live feed and loom tape it up neatly tomorrow, unless of course there is a relay hidden away somewhere that i cannot find, thanks for all your help

There's no relays mate, i've altered and converted loads of mk1 looms.

I would guess at the dip switch bening faulty, it's ok you running a wire but i dont think you will be able to switch high / low if you do that ?

ah ok thats why i could not find a relay

i was looking everywhere.

I got my brother to do the lights with a temporary live wire in place and it gave me everything back working again sidelights, dipped and main beam and my flashers :)

So gonna jus neatly run a new live today and loom tape it all up, i was gonna use some fairly heavy wire for it similar to what was originally used.

i know mate thanks for that, i was about to throw a screwdriver accross the driveway and me dad came out and found the problem in about 10 mins  i guess i wont make an auto electrician

Once i knew the fault was the stalk it was an easy fix drilled out one of the copper rivets cleaned it all up and put it back together with a small phillips screw job done :D

took the old girl out for a spin last night and kept up with a 2.0 tdi audi a3 and then a 2.0 tdci mondeo well pleased with that :ykt:

not bad for a 1600 xflow only running a twin choke weber and bcf2 cam

thanks for all the advice chaps
