Andrade Posted April 15, 2012 Report Posted April 15, 2012 I have the below starter coupled to the engine. I am at stage where we're testing the wiring, one of the items on the list being the starter. The sound coming from the starter looks like it's having a hard time turning the engine round. The starter is definitely in a good shape since it is serviced and tested on a bench before getting it into the engine. The flywheel is a Zetec flywheel redrilled to take a pinto clutch from Retro Ford. Is this starter suitable? If not, what off the shelf starter do I need?
mr zefect Posted April 15, 2012 Report Posted April 15, 2012 mine is a 20l dhc sierra starter but when it broke i used the back of the zetec one changed over the sierra front as the zetec one doesnt fit i have a 18l zetec flywheel redrilled for pinto clutch. Have you got a desent earth it makes a hell of a differnce also you can use a 18l cvh sierra starter.

Thanks m8 i'll try earthing the starter directly to the battery with jumping leads, if that doesn't work I'll start searching for the CVH/DOHC one
bozie Posted April 16, 2012 Report Posted April 16, 2012 i had loads of hassle with starters when my crossflow was rebuilt i ended up just buying a edge high torque gear reduction starter from burtons was about £250 but sorted all problems.

I had that lying in the garage and was under the impression I can use it, seems not! Currently on the lookout for the DOHC one
Andrade Posted April 18, 2012 Author Report Posted April 18, 2012 Found one from a local scrapper for 20€ part number 26681D Works fine and did turn the engine round. Now cleaned and re-painted as it was a bit rusty on the outside
