Rookie Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 Is there anyone in the York area on here who knows what their doing who would be willing to help me with my mk1 escort. I'm not very tecky so don't want to mess about with it in case i do more harm than good. Basically it's been stood in the garage for a couple of months and just won't fire up. Engine turns over , batteries ok,earth's ok i think, just turns till battery goes dead.Ignition lights stopped coming on. Any help much appriciated.
john_3.0s Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 have you checked the plugs after you have been trying to fire it up? are they wet with fuel? do the plugs spark when your trying to turn it over? sorry im a bit far from you down here on the south coast!
5tox Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 Check your basics first buddy is it getting fuel? is it getting air? is it getting a spark?
Rookie Posted July 26, 2012 Author Report Posted July 26, 2012 have you checked the plugs after you have been trying to fire it up? are they wet with fuel? do the plugs spark when your trying to turn it over? sorry im a bit far from you down here on the south coast! Two plugs were wet (back) others ok , they wern't sparking then did and big bang from exhaust then didn't again . Think it's electrical ,anyway taken it into garage see what they make of it. Sick to back teeth of it to be honest. Thanks for replies pity your not nearer john!!
5tox Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 stick at it mate, i know all too well how easy it is to lose heart in a car when your run into problems
john_3.0s Posted July 27, 2012 Report Posted July 27, 2012 sounds like its the coil / condenser to me but a garage should be able to sort it easy
Rookie Posted July 28, 2012 Author Report Posted July 28, 2012 Cars a mk1 escort gt but has a red top engine in it and bike carbs. Thought it was maybe sensor from mbe system on it (or whatever it is ),but it isn't. Thing is it sparked (banged and spluttered) other day now it won't. Don't know if it's mbe system itself ,though checked that and power going in or if it's some other small silly electrical thing that's playing up. Thanks for encouragement 5tox .Should have just bought a standard car (all ford) instead of modded heinz 57 !!. Thanks for replies ,will update , any more thoughts welcome.
Rookie Posted August 11, 2012 Author Report Posted August 11, 2012 Said i'd update , Sorted , turned out it was electrical ,wire that goes from mbe system to fusebox,it was chaffed inside.
5tox Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 glad you sorted it mate, ive built a few of those redtop engines. i reckon the future for my mk1 escort may be an XE
Rookie Posted August 11, 2012 Author Report Posted August 11, 2012 Cheers stox , i was all for getting rid of it and putting something else in but couple of mates who are meccanics said stick with it because their a good engine and wasn't actually the engine that was the problem as it turned out.
5tox Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 the xe is a fantastic engine, tough as old boots and puts out around 150bhp standard The head was originally designed by ford i believe, some had the coscast logo id love to do another one some day
Rookie Posted August 11, 2012 Author Report Posted August 11, 2012 Well the guy i bought it off said it was throwing out about 180bhp (don't know if it is or not ) and that with a bit of tuning would get 200 or more but i'm happy as it is. I mentioned putting a pinto or x flow in to couple of mates (meccanics ) and they said the red top was better, was just thinking of making car more fordy !!. Not that bothered as long as it goes.
