BaileyMex Posted November 9, 2012 Report Posted November 9, 2012 I dont know what everyone else is doing Sunday morning, but I know where I'll be........ In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. 1915 Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae For those that mock or don't agree, I don't care, I know what I owe them
lotusless Posted November 9, 2012 Report Posted November 9, 2012 I went over to the first world war battlefields years back, the bloke i went with knows this brit bloke who has a house now right in the middle of the somme ! He took us to loads of "non tourist" places and he has been asked to be a tour guide as he knows so much about the war. Well some of the stories he was telling us and things he showed us were unreal, he showed us a square bit of concrete at the side of this hill, he then goes on to say he had been looking for this for years. we ask why and he said the germans mounted a machine gun on this base and that this gun was used as the brits were all coming across the field and they just killed thousands of these poor mostly young men !! Many of the bad battle area's really do have a strange feeling to them, we were in a spot in the middle of nowhere there was a small cemetery which he said these sprung up next to field hospitals during the war, i was walking along just next to the cemetery and there was not a single sound no birds no wind no cars and you do feel like you are being watched or followed. This is a very sad place and lots of poor souls lost their lives here and i'm of the belief that some of them are STILL there, if any of you get the chance to go to these area's you will see what i mean. God bless ALL the poor people from all sides who died in this waste of time war.
Mrs O/H/C Posted November 10, 2012 Report Posted November 10, 2012 Thank You to all the soldiers that have fought for our country ... God Bless
Nick Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 I've been to the battle fields on a school trip, it really is such a moving experience and I was so interested and moved by the places we visited that I went a following 2 times in consecutive years. Did u go to Ypres whilst you were out there? At 8 o'clock everyday (if i can remember correctly) there are boggles played at the memorial over looking the city and the whole community gather at the memorial to pay there respects. Ypres was totally levelled during the war and without knowing you would never believe that it was was. God bless to all those who fought and gave there life's to protect the country, rip
lotusless Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 Yes mate we went to Ypres on the last day, it's 11pm btw and it's a lovely tribute from the Belgian people and as you say very moving.
Nick Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 I know they do it at 11am on rememberence Sunday, but they do it on other days as well at different time
mk1estate Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 im pretty sure they do it every night and i think its the belguim fire brigade that does it. I often go back to ypres and menin gate moves me everytime. If you go there any time take the time to go to hill 60(i think) and go to the trenches there. You can actually walk in the trenches and there is a fantastic museum there as well. I dare anyone to go there and not shed a tear for the poor souls lost RIP
Nick Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 That's the one, knew it happened every night just wasn't too sure I've also been to the menin gate, twice, and shed a tear both times isn't it hill 62? I've also been there suprisingly and will echoe what you said about it being so moving, it's spooky, specially when you are down in the tunnels, you get abstrongbsense of being watched. I recommend it to anybody who's thinking of going to go, you will not be disappointed. How about an osf arranged tour next year around this time?
