Why reverse gear sounds different

Today at work for some unknown reason i thought .... i wonder why reverse gear sounds different to the forward gears,

It's cos when you go backwards the sound comes from behind you innit

get yourself a straight cut type 9 and they all sound like that

or get a dog box and its different again! they sound buggered when new and if you drive it like they intended it will need new dog rings at least every 500 miles!
