5tox Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Escort-mk1-mk2-x-member-crossmember-to-fit-a-cosworth-engine-/281132108617?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4174c78b49 what do you guys maker of this, looks smart and means i can fit my pinto without messing about with the sump will be around the same price as an RS sump
over_head_cam Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 Looks well made, if a little bit heavy. The only possible issue I could see is if the mountings for the TCA's and the rack aren't spot on you might have slight geometry issues. But it does look quite good. Having said that, you don't need an RS sump, it just makes it a bit easier to fit it all in. In the past I've used a tin sump off a Sierra, and a bit of gentle 'massaging'.
5tox Posted July 7, 2013 Author Report Posted July 7, 2013 sounds like a nice cheap solution, ill dig out the rubber mallet and have a play
Admin Vista Posted July 7, 2013 Admin Report Posted July 7, 2013 I saw that product discussed elsewhere and as I recall, feedback was not positive. Though I can't remember exactly what was said. I'll see if I can find the discussion again and post a link up to it.
5tox Posted July 7, 2013 Author Report Posted July 7, 2013 cheers Vista, id be pissed off if i spend that amount of cash for something crap
Admin Vista Posted July 8, 2013 Admin Report Posted July 8, 2013 It was on the 2nd page of this thread, though having read it again, there wasn't any feedback that was overly negative, http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=177519&page=2&highlight=crossmember
Bigfish Posted July 8, 2013 Report Posted July 8, 2013 At £150 you can pick up a second hand sump and pipe, I'm sure there was one on here or turbosport recently at around that cost?
Admin Vista Posted July 8, 2013 Admin Report Posted July 8, 2013 Does look like a smart piece of kit though! I kind of wonder how much strength has gone out of it given that it no longer flows almost straight across, instead having a great big step forward welded in perpendicular to the original cross piece.
w p e Posted July 8, 2013 Report Posted July 8, 2013 just cut and reweld your own x/member it takes an hour to cut and weld done mine and about 20 others years ago mines still good
5tox Posted July 9, 2013 Author Report Posted July 9, 2013 i was a bit worried about how much to chop out and re-weld and if it would compromise strength do you literally just cut off the lip and re-weld it?
PaulMags Posted July 10, 2013 Report Posted July 10, 2013 cheaper and better if you use your old crossmember.roughly cut an inch out of the nearest part to the tunnel and slide a box section in there and weld it back up.thats what i did with my world cup x member and use a standard cossy sump.simple.
5tox Posted July 10, 2013 Author Report Posted July 10, 2013 Cheers for the advice guys, i actually have a nice thick piece of box section that will do the trick just fine nice and cheap solution
