browder Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 Hi all, after a six year rebuild im finally doing a shakedown before finishing my car over winter. Took it out last night and outside temp was quite cool. The car is running 2wd yb engine with radtec cooler/rad combo. When first started few week ago the waterpump was leaking so i changed it but have put a pinto one on as i couldnt get cosworth one at the time. Now last night the engine seems to run to hot,its not boiling over but fans coming in and out quite often. I felt the top pipe and its very hot whilst bottom pipe isnt. Im running a stat as well. Are pinto pumps not upto the job? I see burton do genuine ford yb pumps so can get one if needed. Also having probs with temp guage. The sender snapped in the head so i made a boss thats in stat housing but the engine side of the stat if you understand me. Is this ok here? Temp guage goes into red even when just moving car out of garage. I had the cosworth sender fitted at first and have changed it for aftermarket "white" escort type but still same. Im hoping its just still not suited to my 6 dial clocks. Thanks for any help.
escort greg Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 I would check the thermostat I have same set up and my fan never runs unless in. Heavy traffic also if you suss the temperature gauge let me I have same problem lol
Admin Vista Posted September 11, 2013 Admin Report Posted September 11, 2013 The radtec set up also works fine in mine but I moved the temperature switch to a new boss I had fitted on the bottom and used the top one to connect the turbo cooling water return into the header tank. With the switch in the top it's in the hottest part of the rad and if the cut in temperature of the switch in it is quite low, it will cycle the fans on and off quite regularly. As to you temperature gauge issue, a white sender is the correct one. Is it suitable where you've fitted it? Not sure.
browder Posted September 11, 2013 Author Report Posted September 11, 2013 I did think of moving the fan switch lower down but wasnt sure if this would be ok. I may try it briefly wirh stat out. Although coolant must be passing it for rad to be hot. As for sender, just hope that the aftermarket type have wrong resistance. I know its in different place but its in water before the stat opens
Admin Vista Posted September 11, 2013 Admin Report Posted September 11, 2013 Ah, you're using an after-market sender with the original dash? Almost certain to be the wrong resistance. Can you not drill a small hole through the original sender then use an easy out?
browder Posted September 11, 2013 Author Report Posted September 11, 2013 Maybe yeah. Was scared of wreckin something before i'd even drove it lol. Will have look at it over weekend. Ford want forty quid for a sender
Admin Vista Posted September 11, 2013 Admin Report Posted September 11, 2013 £9.70 from Burtons http://www.burtonpower.com/temperature-sender-early-sohc-pinto-x-flow-essex-xtt14.html
browder Posted September 11, 2013 Author Report Posted September 11, 2013 Cheers mate. Just ordered it now. Fingers crossed it reads right. Just got drill other one out now to eliminate that its in wrong place.
