I'm looking for the best electronic ignition for an escort mk1 with a pinto engine

Depends on spend mate. IMHO Bestek are best, H & H are also great. Oldskool Lumenition also reliable but all of the above are circa £200+ but can be made to suit the state of tune on your pinto.

 

I am currently having my stock Pinto converted to electronic and I have gone with an Aldon Ignitor kit which are around £90. Accuspark kits are available online for £30 but I've heard mixed reports about the quality and reliability. I am no expert but I am sure Colin or Joe Ashton or one of the other engine builders can go into more detail for you.

I've just had mine done. As above it all depends on your budget. For £30 odd quid accuspark do a kit to adapt your current distributor, or if your dizzy is knackered (as mine was) you can buy a new dizzy with the kit inside for around £80 from them. I was well pleased with the price until about 10 months after I got it, the accuspark setup completely failed. The car started perfectly in the morning, turned it off to give it a wash and it would not restart. Turns out the ign had completely thrown its toys out of the pram. Colin and Joe Ashton fitted a new bestek kit. (Around £215) which has been built to my engine spec and it fired up first time. So IME its worth paying the money for the better kit. I certainly won't be using accuspark again!

 

Luminition are a similar price but a bit old now and I've known those to fail on occasion. As SmokEm and mrs O/S/F says above, bestek are the ones to go for!

Not fancy going fully mappable? I fitted Megajolt to mine and was ace. Relatively easy to install and use, and can be picked up pretty cheap 2nd hand. Omex, DTA and Emerald also do ignition only kit, and Chester Sportscars do a full kit too.

What is the difference between electronic and mappable? Can you use mappable on a pinto?

Yes, it just means you can use a laptop to adjust the timing yourself to suit the engine throughout the rev range.

it is if your looking to run big power and big carbs and need to play with the advance , Bestek systems and MSD are on most of our big power pinto,s....
