What's going on in this sump?

Hi guys,

 

Haven't seen plates in a sump like this before, can someone explain? They look like they'd get in the way to me (the plate near the bottom of the photo.)

 

I've never seen a sump like this before so I'm a little baffled!

Some South African Escort's had "baffled" sumps like that. I run them on my cars.

I assumed you would have gotten them in the UK as well?
