nigelghia571 Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 Please help a relative newbie. What is correct antifreeze for 1981 2.0 MK5 Cortina? I have various manuals and they advise both Blue and Red!! Confused
crapichris Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 Blue glycol. The modern antifreeze will rot out your seals and is not designed for our more mature models.
Danish Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 Yup, I put red in - it filled the rad with a strange brown foam, corroded the inside of the engine and pretty much destroyed the water pump.
nigelghia571 Posted March 17, 2016 Author Report Posted March 17, 2016 Many thanks. Blue Ethylene Glycol it is then. Thought it would be as my other old car takes it. Just checking as just watched an old wheeler dealers with the Green RS 2000 replica rally car and when the coolant was drained it looked red/pink .
colr6 Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 Blue stuf for the older cars, read something about this few years ago not to mix the two together
DT36 Posted March 18, 2016 Report Posted March 18, 2016 Try not to use tap water if you are mixing your own. You're better off using de-ionised water, especially if you have an aluminium rad.
silverstreak Posted March 18, 2016 Report Posted March 18, 2016 ive used ready mixed red antifreeze in my pinto never had a problem
