franklin Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 I have a 1962 Consul Capri, running a 2l Pinto and a Type 9 5 speed box. I'm not sure what rear axle I've got and have posted a couple of pics hoping somebody on here can identify it. I get roughly 3.1 turns of the propshaft to 1 turn of the rear wheels and 26mph (on a gps speedo) per 1000rpm in top gear. Suggestions appreciated.
guido Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 (edited) Look for numbers on it or a tiny label. Must be a type number on it. Its likely on the differential "nose" to propshaft. Usually, they had as with original small capacity engine no lower end ratios like 3:9 thereabout Edited August 2, 2024 by guido
Miniliteman Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 It is what everyone calls an "Atlas" axle, or a German rear axle (not Cologne). With normal tyres (not very low profile) the numbers you gave add up to a 3.09 CWP ratio which means it is from a period V6 engined Capri or Cortina / Taunus. 1

I intend to fit larger wheels as the existing ones (coincidentally minilites) don't fill the wheel arches sufficiently. That would further raise the gearing. Options now are to either fit a lower ratio diff in the axle, maybe a 3.44:1, or fit a V6, along with the larger wheels.

And if 1200 or to 1500 cc, look at a 3.9 or even shorter ratio. Does good performance with a mild tuned ohc pinto with 5 speed sierra g.box. But dont go willy nilly with that setup. 125 Hp will take it. and a topspeed of 110 mph i'd figure is good. Tire rim combo makes difference in speed acceleration as wel. Ford Escort Sport 1600 and RS2000 mk2 had a 3:54 end ratio Edited August 2, 2024 by guido
guido Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 (edited) Miniliteman, i don't believe it is an Atlas axle, like they had on later Ford Capri. It looks like old Cologne ( Köln ) axle. If it would be, then keep it. ( had to edit post, sorry, lost my way a bit ) Anyway, to be sure......................... go look for it on internet Go check the stamped numbers on, Franklin....... and ask Burtons, they may be of good help. I know as Dutch customer for 25 years Edited August 2, 2024 by guido
guido Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 ok , just check the stamped numbers on and find out would ya? If Atlas, be sure to keep it alive, they are not cheap to get and find anyhow.
franklin Posted August 2, 2024 Author Report Posted August 2, 2024 Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll have a look for numbers tomorrow and contact Burtons.
guido Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 ive made a few calls recently at sales to Mark Calder. Any of them good service. Good help from team Burton performance

franklin Posted August 4, 2024 Author Report Posted August 4, 2024 Thanks for the additional replies guys.. I found this number just forward of the diff housing on the offside. Googling it suggests the axle is off an early 3litre Capri. I'll make contact with these companies tomorrow. 1
