I did a banger rally some years ago. It was in September, so cheap camping . We did France,Germany Italy, and then Germanŷ again on the way back. It was cheap , and a good laugh. We stayed near towns or cities mainly, and ventured out in the evenings. I'd deffo do it again, ( in an old Ford) Driving over and under the alps was epic.
