Late 90s also saw the a fleeting glimpse of RS ownership. OKB5S was a dark blue RS2000 Mk2 with 12 months ticket. What a car, £550 I paid for it. I knew it was a bit rough but it was an RS and it was mine. I loved it. Lowered by 1.5 inches and sat on 185 60 series tyres it looked and handled. It had a Janspeed exhaust and so sounded just so too. The doors had yale dead locks which was one of the ways people tried to stop the light fingered taking them away back in the day. Having rebuilt the inner wings to stop the struts coming through the bonnet, yes they were that bad, mostly filler, it became obvious it had a pretty doggy shell. Having removed the carpet to dry out the interior which was always either wet or on a good day damp I discovered large amounts of thin air where Ford had originally put the inner sills. In the spring when the weather improved I hoovered up what remained of the inner sills and put the now dry carpet went back in.
OKB was sold with six months MOT left. In the mean time I had a ball driving that car and still remember fondly it's ability to do things sideways, like exiting roundabouts. Now I understood how Toad felt, Oh joy oh poop poop. Sacrilege to treat an RS in such a manner? You have to bear in mind that back then they where relatively common and cheap. I remember one of the local RSOC member selling a gorgeous one £2500 around the time I had OKB.
I am staggered by the money Escorts are changing hands for now.
