The rod is probably touching on the bulk head. Mine did the same, you need to enlongate the hole.

Put some 20/50 in, 10/40 is way too thin.

My ignition light has always flickered with lights and wipers on but has never been a problem with a flat battery so I just ignore it. The brake pedal might need new bushes does it have any side to side movement?

Steering rack bushes? Whatever it is don't drive it, I had a caliper come off at 70 mph on the m1 and it was just a bit frightening.
