Very well explained about the noise Bortaf, i know what i meen but cant expalian very well sometimes (lack of education). We found running atf in the 5 speed boxes cured alot of 5th gear problems due to better lube , but the proper semi synthetic oil would be the right choice for definate .

Unless the beering is really bad then no it wouldnt cause the gear selection probs , sounds more like the 1st to 2nd syncro hud is worn . Just out of interest what gearbox is it , 4 or 5 speed ? and wot oil are you running in it ?

If the rumbling stops when you press the clutch then it`s not the release bearing , more than likely the 1st motion shaft bearing .

Thanks for that but maybe i should of explained better , i wanted to paint under the bonnet and in the boot area of my mk1 and see on ebay they do a synthetic based paint cheap but only mix in RAL colours so was wundering if there was a RAL colour close enough to modena green to use in these areas , but thanks again modena for takin the trouble to answer ..gearbox
