mk1estate Posted November 9, 2007 Report Posted November 9, 2007 Hi, im not sure that these are legal...i seem to remember a few homemade efforts self destructing and im sure someone was killed with these wheels....perhaps our other members can help do you know if they are legal...they look bloody great though i might get some for my mk1 estate
bmxdave Posted November 9, 2007 Report Posted November 9, 2007 They are illegal. But there is a few grey areas, and theres probably a loophole or two. In my opinion theyre no less safe then factory ones if they are properly welded. If they are bodged thats when they become dangerous. I think theyre sexy, and if james is going to be making sets then i recon hes well onto something Theres definately a space in the market for you there, and you could start up a good little buissness. Everyone wants a set of banded steelies, and if your welder turns out to be extremely good (good doesnt surfice on these, he has to be brilliant) then i reckon you go for it! Youd have to sell them with a warning though, something like for off road use only or use at own risk.
bomber1 Posted November 9, 2007 Report Posted November 9, 2007 i think the welder has to have a certan certificate for them to be legal
james p Posted November 9, 2007 Author Report Posted November 9, 2007 Youd have to sell them with a warning though, something like for off road use only or use at own risk. there stock car rims mate
capri29 Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 Any more news on this? Id be very interested in a pair of 15x7 and a pair of 15x8. I would like to see some pics of 15s first though. Some hub centers look better than others but with the right amount of dish, anything looks good.

Muttley MK2 Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Any one preparing to fit a set of these wheels note this. These are illegal when fitted to a road car! The reason being a simple one, Insurance, Try telling your insurance company that you are fitting cut and welded wheels and they will throw a fit. If you relly must then i suggest you get an engineers report to back up the welding! No welder in the world can guarantee his welds unless they are x rayed and crack tested. I worked fo UKOP in the eighties welding a pipeline for oil right across the uk, so I have done a bit of welding!! All the welds made on that project were electronically checked for cracks and leaks and 12% of all welds needed rewelding! So beware folks. I have one more comment,,,,, UNSPRUNG WEIGHT, wht do you think all hi-performance cars are fitted with alloy wheels
bmxdave Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Youd be surprised how heavy alloys are compared to steels.
Muttley MK2 Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 I'd be surprised if a banded steel was lighter than an alloy of the same size
