Took the van to manchester this morning. 30 miles into the 40 mile journey I noticed a bit of smoking out the back when I lifted off then accelerated again. As I was only a mile or so from Birch services I decide to pull in.

Slowing down, there was a 'metallic' pinking like sound. Popped the bonnet and the rad is steaming. Wait a couple of minutes, and there's no water in there. Fill it up. Check for leaks. None. Try starting it. It was a real struggle, like a minute of weak cranking before it did start. Check the exhaust for smoke, and a load of water had been spat out of it. Check the hoses. One is leaking.

Sh*t.

Looks like it's all leaked out and I've blown the head gasket. There's no mayo on the dipstick, but if all the water has leaked out then I guess there wouldn't.

Got relayed home filled it with water and it starts, but there's slight white smoke out of the back.

Looks like I'm fitting that two litre sooner than I thought.

For those of you who don't know, only last week I bought a two litre Zetec as a spare! So this aft I stripped it of all the crap I don't need (manifolds, power steering pump etc) and cleaned it up. Gonna give it a couple of coats of engine enamel then whip the old one out, swap everything over (sump, water rail etc).

I need to tidy up the engine bay due to the oil leaks the current engine had when i started, then drop the new one back in.

Should be a week or so before it's back on the road, cos I'm going to London this weekend.
