X-pack-Glyn Posted April 28, 2007 Report Posted April 28, 2007 i think its a ring , maybe holed piston, i ran lean the other day Got heavy fuming out the filler cap, about half a litre of oil in the catch tank in 10 miles, about 5-10% down on power. il compression test it tomorrow, but what figuires should i be looking at? is there anything else i can do to check it before i tear into it. its recently had a top end rebuild, and ive had the cam cover off and checked the oil way from the head to block is clear at the back which it is.
X-pack-Glyn Posted April 28, 2007 Author Report Posted April 28, 2007 stumbled across a 205 block with injection head in a pallet yard a few months back, its still there and its mine for 20 quid. i think thats worth a punt and taking a chance on even if i only get 6 months out of it, in the meantime il 2.1 my old block the cheap way using 2.8i pistons.
andrewg1323 Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 CR should all be within 10% of each other
X-pack-Glyn Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 I checked all the compressions... and got 75 psi on all cylinders, thought WTF, then realised i forgot to hold the throttles open.... results are... 1, 138psi. 2, 145 psi. 3, 140 psi. (and i know this one has a slight score down the bore) 4, 132 psi.
Supercharged Nat Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 hmm might be worth taking the head off should be 142- 170 psi at cranking.. would have thought a holed piston would be much lower. its seems that they are fairly even but all at the lower end of the tolerance.. how many miles on the bottom end? might be a valve or two, or head gasket maybe?
oliwally Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 That Doesnt Seem Too Bad,Maybe A Little Low But Far From Terrible. When You Had The Cover Off What Was The Stem Seals Like? My 1600 Capri Would Puff Smoke Quite Heavy When Shutting Throttle From High Revs. When I Next Did The Tappets Found The Stem Seals On The Exhaust Side Mainly Up At Top Of Valve. Have A Look At The Breathers? When Were The Tappets Last Checked Or Adjusted?
X-pack-Glyn Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 Thanks for comments..... Heads just had a full top end rebuild, all done by myself, valves lapped, new stem seals, and spent weeks polishing ports on head, all now ford gaskets used. there is zero smoke out the zorst now, allways used to chuff a white/blue cloud on startup. ive checked the oil return from the head to the block is clear and no problems there. i think the brunt of the problem is this burton alloy cam cover, its got about a qtr of the size shield as the ford ones got. engines got about 90k on it, and for the last year or so its been thrapped around by me with a 3.77 and a 4 speed on the motorway. its only been in the car just over a year and its had 5 oil changes. i was supprised it had as much compression as it did really, im not at all kind to it when im behind the wheel, but the servicing makes up for it.
andrewg1323 Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 Ratios look fine to me Holed piston wouldnt produce a reading Tried a wet test too?
X-pack-Glyn Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 well, tokk of the metal valve on the bottom breather which seemed to be stuck, went out for a blat and catch tank from oil cap was empty when i got back.
Supercharged Nat Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 was that the valve in the block you took out? if so then i had the same thing.. i removed the valve internals and then put it back into the block breather, fitted it to the catch tank and now the engine breaths through that rather than the filler cap.. no more oil/ vapour all over the rocker cover! should only be vapour from the block too, due to the baffle fitted in the block.
X-pack-Glyn Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 well, i took it out to check it, completely forgot about it, did 15-20 hard miles and stopped to check the catch tank... empty, thought wtf...no oil i bet, checked the oil level, fine!
Supercharged Nat Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 is it down on power now or does it feel ok? glad its not fooked!
X-pack-Glyn Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 Feels good now. i adjusted points and its never run so well... (yes, im back on points set up as i had problems with transit leccy ignition).
Supercharged Nat Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 well what ever works mate! glad shes a go'in again
