Rick Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 reconditioning my english diff fitting all new bearings today fitted 3 out of the 4 but im stuck on one; the bearing that fits round the pinion is so close to the teeth that i cant just drive this one off with a screwdriver as i dont wana damage the teeth any ideas on how to remove it without buying any expensive tools if all else fails il have to give it my dad for him to take to work and do... but id rather do it myself i hate being beaten
petrolhead01 Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 you can do this with a angle grinder!! remove the cage and all the rollers then grind in one place across the bearing not in towards the pinion and you will eventually get nearly all the way threw but don't go right threw because all the old bearing will by now be bloody hot and will have expanded enough to either fall off on its own or just need a very light tap to remove it !!! this was you will never damage the pinion and will also not put to much heat onto it like you would with a blowtorch/acetylene!! and knacker up the original tempering on the pinion!!
Rick Posted May 1, 2007 Author Report Posted May 1, 2007 man. i was hoping id find a solution a bit less drastic than that last experience i had breaking a bearing it shattered all in my face
