johnny_h Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 What the fook is going on with my starter motor? I turn the ignition and I get some rubbish clicking and the lead from the solenoid to the starter almost melts. When I remove the starter from the car, lay it on the road and use a jump lead to earth the starter it turns it fine. What am I doing wrong? Can someone show me a pic of thier solenoid wiring?
GT_Jim Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 ive had this before, check the cable going to the started and make sure that its touching the threaded bit not the stater or anything else as its getting earthed through the starter which isnt good
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Thirded Sounds like a shite earth mate, or depending on how your powering it out of the car... a knackered solenoid. Now, you have just had your engine bay painted havent you??? Are any battery to body, or body to engine earth straps bolted down onto shiney metal??? If not, remove paint, dirt and other 'Harry Munk' from the mating surfaces using some emery cloth, and refit and tighten with a smear of copper grease. If that doesn't sort it, the solenoid maybe shorting out which is sending the high ampage (thick cable) current directly to earth hence a very hot wire
johnny_h Posted June 2, 2007 Author Report Posted June 2, 2007 Cheers ppl, The solenoid is brand new but the big wire from the solenoid to the starter has seen better days. I'll have another good nose around today once I've adjusted the clutch, bled the brakes, adjusted the handbrake, find out why the idle speed goes up to 2000rpm after driving for a while and fix an exaust leak. All this whilst prepping the toadsta!
johnny_h Posted June 2, 2007 Author Report Posted June 2, 2007 This is why the starter was playing up
johnny_h Posted June 2, 2007 Author Report Posted June 2, 2007 I just went to solder it back together but the nylon bush around the terminal is fooked.
