Just how good are Honda I-VTEC engines?

As above, I've read that they are the best 4 cylinder engine around and after being out in an S2000 i'd agree that at just under 9000rpm they sound awesome. Also they reckon that with the 1 million units from the factory they never any of them come back with a problem. We're looking into doing an engine conversion on the elise but what about in OSF's? Mk2 Escort anyone?

I've also read that you can easily get about 250bhp out of a near standard with breathing and exhaust mods.

A mate of mine has put a 1.6 VTEC in his mini. He is the first person to have put one in a mini and keeping the standard front end. Most people put on the clubman front for extra room. Anyway... it's bloody fast!

deep breath in...

right, firstly i believe its over 15milluion units with not a single failure.

right, the vtec, well firstly its absolutly genius, the honda S2000 engine produces 247bhp as standard, so if you want 250 then you wont have to do anything. its also an all ally engine and comes with a 6 speed in the S2000's i believe.

also there very economical around town as only 8 valves open(4 inlet, 4 exhaust, the other 8 only open 1mm off the seat)) but when you hit 4500rpm hold on!!!

people say there not very torquey engines and are right in a sense, but show me a highly tuned crossflow with a good torque figure.

also, there respond very very well to supercharging, the charger overcomes the torque issue and makes it a tad more responsive at low revs. they use the supercharged s2000 engine in the ariel atom and i saw one run a 10.9 at the pod at the weekend in standard form.

they do a three stage vtec, but im not sure if thats the one they use in the S2000's. if you wanna know how it all works just ask. :D

It was an old source lol, I just used that one because I don't know how many they've made

When I went out with my mates dad (it's my mates mums car  ) he said he doesn't drive it hard. Afterwards I was thinking 'that wasn't being driven hard!?'

It's up to me and dad to convince my brother to buy the conversion for his elise, as personally I don't think about £5000 is bad for a 250bhp, ultra reliable, super fast elise. Let the badgering begin.

ps. bash I thought I read somewhere that a version of the S2000 has a 280bhp unit? I dunno though I might just be getting muddled up
