Hunter T Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 Got an MOT on fri for my motor... Had a knocking coming from suspension turning through lock... Got it up in the air today and as you spin from lock to lock I noticed that the struts are moving a bit as well, then the spring clonks back into place in the top cup plate that it sits in...(it moves a few mm) Looking at the actual strut top itself you can see it moving slightly then the spring re-sits itself and that is when the clonk is.... Anyone know of this or ideas about what to do???
bomber1 Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 my mk1 does the same by the sound of it so will be intrested in the awnser
flyingbanana Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 i assume they are sitting in the cups correctly before you start turning ?...also is the top mount nut done up to the right torque?
Hunter T Posted July 24, 2007 Author Report Posted July 24, 2007 yes and yes.... might just strip the strut down and re build
Tom Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 lowered springs? they do that a lot as the top mount is solid with a rubber bush in the middle that twist as you steer. sometimes, cos of the spring fit, the spring doesn't turn the top mount properly hence wht it slips out of place. roller top mounts is the best answer otherwise you can wire the springs to the top and bottom cup
bomber1 Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 tom would concentric top mounts do the same job ? sorry hunter didnt mean to hijack ur thread
Hunter T Posted July 24, 2007 Author Report Posted July 24, 2007 cool no problems... take the thread I still learn from it and may get an answer 2!!! Will it pass MOT in current state??? any real issues other than it clonks???
Hunter T Posted July 24, 2007 Author Report Posted July 24, 2007 Thanks Tom good info... Where do i get roller top mounts?
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 my mk2 escort used to do thaty and went straight through 3 mots
bomber1 Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 rally design or burtons im sure this is what my mk1 does and it did pass its mot though out of 5 testers ud get 5 diffrent answers
Tom Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 yep any top mounts with a bearing will be fine - i've only had it do it on a couple of cars. different springs i spose thats why its important, with standard top mounts, to do the top nut up with the wheels straight otherwise you'll find the car pulls all the time
Hunter T Posted July 24, 2007 Author Report Posted July 24, 2007 Wicked... cheers all... feeling slightly better now as goin on a european road trip in 2 weeks to the Alps with my Bro in his TR6 and my Dad in in either his MG V8 or Healey 100... and me in the best car... my escort!
