Burns Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 the stuff out of the pumps retro ford magazine did an article about this this month, which petrol's better than which, although i imagine you don't have the same brands as we have?
dragaddict Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 the normal is allways better for power but its easy for detonation
abarth78 Posted September 20, 2007 Author Report Posted September 20, 2007 yes i use torco at the moment..... i was wondering what you guys use over there.....
LEONMEX Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Best stuff out of the pump here is Shell v-power which is 102 octane i think, normal out of the pump unleaded is 95-98 octane. The Torco is race fuel i think??
abarth78 Posted September 20, 2007 Author Report Posted September 20, 2007 yep it is it varies from 104 to 120+ in fact i had a problem with it i was given a 114 octane for my engine and i couldn`t do a good run on it ... i had to mix it with normal fuel to get some more power cause it was too much of an octane rating for my engine
LEONMEX Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 We have octane boosters in a small bottle that you mix with the fuel that adds +2 octane. To much octane is not always good then??
Admin Mk2Jo Posted September 20, 2007 Admin Report Posted September 20, 2007 Shell V Power is only 98 RON sadly Esso, BP and Texaco super is 97 RON i believe The V Power that is sold in parts of Europe is 102 RON but we don't have that from the pumps over here unfortunately.
abarth78 Posted September 20, 2007 Author Report Posted September 20, 2007 no its not good cause the higher the octane is the longer it takes to burn... taht is one of the reasons that you can give it more timing
RETRO_AL Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 shell optimax is the best, its better than the higher rated ron that tescos and others sell
LEONMEX Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Would'nt use supermarket petrol in the old girl retro,it would be like drinking alcohol free value lager
jimmyesh Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 shell optimax is the best, its better than the higher rated ron that tescos and others sell Hasn't Shell V-power superceded Shell Optimax? Think it was just a name change
dragaddict Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 i use VP and it's got hi octane.on my cos i use VP but when i had 21 pinto with nos i used pump gas it ran faster & more power full.
Guest HPEjadey1 Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 we find no power difference between vp , sunoco,bp 102, v power but do use vp due to various timing setting's
dragaddict Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 with pump fuel you have to retard more the engine & on racing fuel play more on tming, fuel & gives you a chanse to risk more
Copey Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 have used v-power in mine, but it was well busy one day and put tesco high octain in, wasnt any different, but the sound of detination...
dragaddict Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 it depends on a std or semi race engines only pump gas is good for better power
texr2000 Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 I got a Shell Station just up the road and use V-power in both my cars, the guy who built my engine said to use hight octane in it so thats what i use. 102.9p - 104.9p make it a bit expencive now days tho...
Toby Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Fuel octane, compression and timing are all interrelated in my limited understanding of the subject. With more octane you can run more compression and timing. This will help a highly tuned race engine more than a street motor because the cam timing (usually long in a race engine) adversly affects the effective compression ratio due to the inlet valve being wide open on the return of the piston up the bore on the compression stroke. Ooops. I think I may have gone off on one!
texr2000 Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 I don’t really understand it ether... helps on turbo cars I believe allows them to run higher boost?? Due to the way it burns or something Did learn about it at college but I cant remember

Due to the way it burns or something Did learn about it at college but I cant remember Higher boost is higher effective compression. Higher octane can tolerate this higher compression without detonating.
deltamal Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Always use the 97 octain in mine, it dosen't like the 95, got 12.5:1 comp.
dragaddict Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 on my cos i run hi octane vp c16 its very hi on octane & expensive, but i use it for racing
Toby Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 on my cos i run hi octane vp c16 its very hi on octane & expensive, but i use it for racing Cheeper than pistons!!
dragaddict Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 of course its cheeper than pistons especialy when boost comes in
