johnboy Posted October 1, 2007 Report Posted October 1, 2007 Take the spark plugs out and pour a little diesel down the cylinder bores, will help incase the rings are seized.

Admin Vista Posted October 1, 2007 Admin Report Posted October 1, 2007 Ideally you need to turn the oil pump without cranking the engine. On a pinto this is a achieved by pulling the distributor and using a special tool to turn the oil pump drive with the engine stationary. That makes sure the oil pump and system is fully primed when you're ready for the first live start. Not sure how to achieve the same effect on one of those engines, but pull the plugs and drop a small amount of engine oil down the bores, give it a little time to ease in around the rings, then crank the engine slowly with a spanner on the crank nut. Once you're sure it's free enough to turn, spin the engine on the starter (still with the plugs removed) until you get oil pressure on the gauge. Once you've done that you're ready to start trying to get it to start, and probably a little fault finding on that too.
antz Posted October 1, 2007 Author Report Posted October 1, 2007 brill cheers vista! you make it sound so simple!!!! roll on 3 weeks time when i can get down there and work some charm on the owner then i just gotta get it back think ill have to hire a trailer and do a trip home and then back in a day ....then some sweet talking to her ladyship to forgive me for running off for a day to play with a rust bucket
Mr Sam Posted October 1, 2007 Report Posted October 1, 2007 plugs out wizz it round with fresh petrol might need a spray of contacty stuff ( ) in the dizzy cap might also want to squirt some 'easy start' down the carb (that stuffs fun ) when you get it going let it run for a minute or so just to warm up and drain it of oil ooh also check your water pumps not seized
antz Posted October 1, 2007 Author Report Posted October 1, 2007 now you make it sound hard sam how do i get old petrol out of the tank?
Admin Vista Posted October 1, 2007 Admin Report Posted October 1, 2007 now you make it sound hard sam how do i get old petrol out of the tank? On my old GTE, just leave it standing a few days and it would have leaked out. There's a flexible hose connects to the tank on them, as I recall it's on the offside front of the tank. (though that might have been on my non injected 1600 Mk1 Astra) pull the hose off and drain it to a tray. Old Engines are Easy Antz, they just seem complicated because you've only just started. Get a book and pull a scrap one apart and you'll see what I mean. Even on new engines with all their electronic gizmos (which sadly arre complicated) the basic principals are just the same.
antz Posted October 2, 2007 Author Report Posted October 2, 2007 cheers vista. im just plannign ahead incase i can get this GTE....i ont wanna go round and get it then find its stuck on a driveway! i saw a astra mk1 manual in a charity shop last week but cant remember where
