Atlas axle size

I'm getting an axle from the U.S.A. for my mk1 escort as they're too expensive over here  . Only problem is the Yanks list everything in inches across the diff housing i think . So they do 8.8 inch , 9 inch etc axles which don't mean much unless i know how big an Atlas diff housing is . I know that a 9 inch axle is too strong and heavy for what i've got so how big is an Atlas axle using the "inch" method ? :?

Complete new 8.8 inch set up with new power lock diff for less than £800  Or is this still too big ? fms-m-4006-b355_w.jpg

I'd be interested to know how you get on as I'm thinking of doing the same, I've a capri atlas on the garage floor that the diff alone will cost £800!

If you don't mind me asking who's the supplier? what diff ratios are on offer?

If you want measurements off the Capri axle I'm happy to grab a tape measure. PM if you want a quicker response.

Only difference being you'd want a narrow and I'd want a wide.

Yes a U.K. sourced atlas axle refurb with a new slipper and lower gear ratio than a capris , shortened to fit unarched escort etc is over £2000  . I'll find out about the Yankie axles and tell you the complete cost with shipping next week . Lots of places do them in America e.g. Summit racing , Currie enterprises etc etc

Had an 8.8 inch mustang axle in my cappa before going to a 9 inch. The axle was built by kev at C.R.A.P conversions it had a disc brake conversion and an arburn LSD fitted. They come from late model mustangs and are 1 inch wider than a capri axle. There good for about 600bhp when you use strange half shafts and theres many diffrent ratios available for the diff.

Cool but what about the 7.5 inch ones that they chuck in the skip on some of the standard mustangs etc . They must still be strong enough for an old 4 cylinder escort and lighter than the 8.8 inch job

Do you know Tony (PetrolHead) of busted cossie box fame? - he's had quite a bit to do with Ford 9" axles and may offer advice.

Atlas prices are crazy, even s/h - I've been looking at Volvo stuff recently

This bunch look interesting, only concern is getting all the right bits first time

Tonys got a 9 inch axle now but that's far too strong for what i want . Ok on a nitrious V8 with 800+ bhp though!!!!!!!

Ralley design do an axle called the hercules 350 its rated at 350bhp loads of ratios available has 8 inch diff. says its direct replacement for english axle. £1050 +vat for open diff one or £1390 + vat for one with torque biasing LSD fitted.

Think RD has stopped selling the Hercules ...

Gaz that £400 one complete.. 4 stud or 5 stud ? or has it got a removable flange that you would need to source .....

I may be wrong but with the cast in ears on those they look like 5HA's as used by Chysler and Morgan .. and some Triumphs possible, if it is its between an english and atlas on strength ... allthough it could be a 4HA too..

Dean from Salisbury Transmissions should be coming over from France next week, if you can hang on i'll get him to take a look.. can you post up the direct links to the axles your looking at ?

*edit*

Just spotted the in the top pic .. the little c clips that hold it together ..notorious for letting go, and its from a Camaro ...

Al Wayman's had a few problems with those clips over the years racing his Camaro over here... So has Rob Compton in his Thundersaloon Vauxhall Bellmont . I'll try and get a message to them to find out the SP

Ok sounds interesting . I'm in no rush as my car don't go yet and winters comming plus my english axle's ok on the street rubber anyway . I've got a sailsbury 4HA axle for free but i don't need anything that strong really plus it needs 3 people too pick it up !!!!!!!! . The rally design "hercules" axle is not available from them anymore and was just a Mustang axle from currie enterprises etc anyway. Gotta be a suitable strong , lightweight axle somewhere that's cheaper than a £2000 Atlas

check this out on Ebay , rebuilt atlas for escort done by gartac and it's £2500 with a day left to go !!!!!!! :shock:4648_1.jpg

Have you tried HAUSER RACING they did the narrowed atlas in my mk1 it came out of 2.8 special capri so has LSD already and the MOSER shafts are supposed to be strong as hell , i'll look at the invoice later and let you know how much but it was cheap

Geoff at Hauser and Chris Issac's (Chris Issac Racecars) have been narrowing atlas's for years for people, allthough i thought they had moved on to FAB 9's

Chris used to be at Gallows Corner , saw him at Lydden a few months ago but forgot to ask where he had gone .. anyone know where he's moved to

I've not seen them advertising it recently, availability of spares is always a worry too

You can get all the spares for the 8.8 inch yankie axles and they are cheap as chips . I'm probably going for the 28 spline alloy shafts and they are soooooo strong i'll never brake one with my high reving hairdryer of a 4 pot even with 9000 rpm full throttle launches with hoosiers

those moser shafts, aint they the ones lee redgrave sheered in his mk1 at brunters last year?he was only sticking 350 up its arse as well

He didn't break the 28 spline ones as he's got an atlas i think . An atlas has 22 spline shafts i think

im only on 185/60's so probably not worrying the axle too much but i do give it some stick with a V8 lol

The 8.8 was used in lower performance cars, the next axle up is the 8 inch then the top dog was the 9 inch.

I think the 8.8 has the shafts held in with "C" clips (i take it thats what the 2 clips are) not like all the other british & american ford axles, clip breaks shaft comes out !!

The 8 & 9 inchers are the hot rodders first pick, though the 8.8 at is still better than what we have over here.

If your car is not lowered to much then the fitting wont be a problem,if it is you may need a small bit of floor modding though.

Here are some pics of a 8 inch next to an atlas, the 8.8 is about the same size as the 8 inch
