Tom Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 if two driven wheels have equal traction then an open type diff will transmit power equally to each one. only when a wheel loses traction will the ratio change. same for plate type and atb's until a wheel or wheels lose traction. welded diffs eat shafts through cornering as the inner wheel (and shaft) wheel tramp or scrub causing bind up in the shaft. Tis the way i see it anyhow
Toby Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Just for K.J. A locker puts the most strain on the shafts as it's got a savage take up from standstill as it's already locked (even when the cars standing still) . An L.S.D. won't lock until the wheels break traction so less strain as you'll be moving slighty , an A.T.B. won't ever lock solid as it hunts for the wheel with the most traction and transfers power between the 2 so this causes the least strain of all the diff types . If you do hard launches with for example a 120 bhp car with an open diff you won't break a shaft , fit an L.S.D and the risk goes up but not that much and you'll still not break one . Fit a locker and you will break them !!!!!!! ......... Thanks Gaz thats cleared it up in my mind - NOT! So the ATB looks for the wheel with the most traction and puts 100% of the power thru one shaft and this is better!!?? - What am i missing? - I don't expect anyone to mention my one wotnot here!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Shafts usually only brake when moving the car from standstill on a high reving launch , they never usually break if the cars moving . So a welded diff will break more shafts than an A.T.B. diff will because for the inital moment of take off the shafts are stressed more . The A.T.B diff will cushion the intital shock on take off because it won't lock 100% , this will give enough time to start moving which usually saves your shafts . My mates car broke shafts with a 120 bhp pushrod and a locker last year , now he's got a 185 bhp pinto and an A.T.B. and he brakes nothing
Toby Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Thanks! Well the proof of the pud's in the eating so the theory must be right... See what you mean KJ Is there anything he doesn't know??
Guest MK1gaz Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 If your gonna get funny then don't ask questions then in case you don't like the reply . The proof of the pudding is = For years we all broke shafts with a locker BUT DIDN'T once we bought a proper diff

The proof of the pudding is = For years we all broke shafts with a locker BUT DIDN'T once we bought a proper diff I know what you mean - done loads with a plate type with tons of revs at the pod then went fat shafts tran-x - Harris stylie - problem solved. Sounds like an atb could have done it but as I say the wheel lifting issue put me off even if you shouldn't be lifting 'em! Thanks for the advice....

Yeah but Toby, James is lifting both wheels & running a 12.76 Who Loves yer baby. Jeff Harris.

Retromotorsport Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Can i just add its not BHP that breaks things .. its the torque/grip ratio ..
Toby Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Can i just add its not BHP that breaks things .. its the torque/grip ratio .. Probably the impact too from the clutch dumping!! I meant rear wheels Jeff! Has James got any intentions of that.....I think it would be a good idea!
