Rick Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 anyone here made there own exhaust? im thinking of making my own welding together steel tubing so i can have twin cherry bombs at the rear. is it hard?
Delotus Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 Hi i have made a few here and there over the years. To answer your question is it hard?. Nothings hard if you have had experience of such work and practice makes perfect!. Measure any existing pipework so you know what you are connecting it all up to. Use clean rust free tubing, this helps when your welding two pieces together. Work out how you are going to mount and support the back box also. You can make sections at a time and then weld them together by Tacking them to check there overall shape. When you are happy with the way it is looking, weld any tacked pieces fully. Wish i took pictures of the exhaust i did on my mate morris minor pickup i made, this would of shown you how i did it complete with motor bike silencer Other than making one yourself ,see whats for sale elsewhere, might save you the work.,or how anyone else has done one ,to get ideas. Good luck,Tim
johnny_h Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 INSERT SCAFFOLD POLE INTO MANIFOLD FLANGE. SECURE WITH CLAMP. CUT OFF THE OTHER END TO REQUIRED LENGTH. TACK ON A COUPLE OF HANGERS. JOB DONE!
Rick Posted October 27, 2006 Author Report Posted October 27, 2006 scaffolding is a bit hefty bah how hard can it be
4parajon Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 Or you could just ask me to bend you some tube up
Mr Sam Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 scafolding would weigh too much i really mus get rid of my back box
topi Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 You can buy a 2meter length of mild steel exhaust tubing from most motorfactors for about £10, and then just cut/bend it to fit. Job's a goodun.
QuadCamCapri Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 I've made a few, even made the silencers from scratch on the race car. Just made a stainless steel one this summer for my 24V, got the silencers from Jetex. After a lot of searching for the best (cheapest) place to get bends and tubing i found www.nexusflow.co.uk in Hounslow who supply the food industry were about half the price or more than exhaust suppliers and also very helpful. As already mentioned above best to tack it together as you work along under the car then when your happy weld fully. Although a TIG welder would be nice the MIG didn't do a bad job. I also made some flanges to bolt it together, much easier to remove when needed. Total cost of system £210.....
350moggy Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 how does that siamese system sound sarnie ??
4parajon Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 If you tell me what you want I'll get it done for a donation to the site plus delivery (about a £10) and tube (2" mild steel about £5).....is that cheap enough for you Let me know what you want or ideally send me your old system so I can copy the flow of the pipe where it fits underneath the car.

QuadCamCapri Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 Cheers Tim & Kev how does that siamese system sound sarnie ?? Connected to a Cosworth 24V on a pair of triple choke carbs it certainly sounds different, but from where I'm sitting I'm not sure what it sounds like. Perhaps if anybody heard it on the track at Ford Fair could compare it with anything?
