jimbo Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 Hi All, My Mk2 has developed a bit of a whirr as it drives. I think that this might be due to a couple of things. 1) a very slight leak of axle oil, which I plan on topping up this week. 2) I also think that one of the rear whell bearings is going. At higher speeds (60+) the whirr is quite noticeable, but when I sway one to the left, it eases off. Does this sound feasible to you folks? Your thoughts and comments are always greatly appreciated. Cheers, Jim
Mr Sam Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 any idea if the whirr is coming from the diff or the bearing?
jimbo Posted November 11, 2007 Author Report Posted November 11, 2007 I was thinking the bearing, because it eased off when I veered to one side, but I don't know if the same might be experienced through a worn diff. The way the Haynes talks about the diff makes it seem like that'll go on and on...... My cars done 77k with none of the service history showing bearings or diff being touched (I think I'm the first home mechanic the car has seen.) It's a Timken axle if that makes any difference to your thoughts......Oh BTW. Is the tinken axle the one that is more likely fitted to Mk1 escorts, just trying ti guage which bearing kit I might need.
Admin Vista Posted November 11, 2007 Admin Report Posted November 11, 2007 Sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Edit: Timken is indeed an English type axle and is what is fitted to an escort as standard.
jimbo Posted November 11, 2007 Author Report Posted November 11, 2007 And I just missed one on ebay for £3!
