I looked into this when I wanted one last year.

Spray guns usually vary from abou 8 to 14 cubic feet per minute air consumption, 12cf/m being a large suction fed gun which is something like what you'll probabally need if your doing a home spray job.

Consider as well that if your going to buy a good compressor you should try to use it as often as possible because it's going to cost you a fair bit, and it should last many years if you look after it,

I use mine with a little die grinder for port matching, and with a sander aswell, and these are going to use quite alot of air too because you use them for long periods of time, like spraying. I dont like having to wait for the pressure to build up.

I settled on a 14cf/min compressor, single cylinder to keep the cost down, with a fair sized horizontal res', because i've quite a bit of room.

Got it from Machine mart on a VAT free day, and so far it's been great and I've never had to wait :)

Get a 14cfm 150 litre tank 3hp motor. The machine mart unit is good and cheap as well in comparison. This will keep up with a wing and door etc ok . If you mant to be really cocky do wot I used to .Get two 3hp compressors 3hp units and connect them together with just a piece of airline out of the airline t pieces. This will give you enough air to run a air da sander constantly,or a very good spraygun pretty drama free. A combination of two compressors just about held my pro sata hvlp top coat guns .If you get a gun the devilbis gti gun is now at sensible money as a new gun has been launched ,this will give a good finish and isnt as mad on air as the dearer sata guns. That will give you pro air delivery that you can run on home electic. One compressor will work but you will need to let it catch up between two or three panels painted.Get a water trap on it ,thats imperative, clarke do budget ones for about 25 pounds that will sort you out.Look on ebay for a deal on a gun gtis are on there quite a bit for alright money.Get one with a 1.4 set up in it thats the best for laquer etc check that when you buy one. note even two linked together will not run a air fed mask as well though.
