Was out earlier doing some checks and noticed that there was some (but not much) mayo on the dipstick.

I know that this is usually an indicator of a blown head gasket, but could it just be caused by the dipstick hanging halfway out over the last couple of weeks?

Cheers,

Jim

Check for oil in your rad and mayo on your oil cap just to be on the safe side.

If your dipstick has been hanging out, it may be condensation on it that's caused it (if that's possible!)

There is no sign of oil in the coolant, and just a tiny trace of mayo on the oil cap.

I only changed the head gasket 7,000 miles (6 months ago) following overheating caused by a water pump failure, so it's not due for a change.

Does anyone think the condensation theory makes sense? The car's not garaged and we live in the sticks, so it does feel the brunt of the cold weather.

Has the water level dropped? If you have no sludge in the water system then condensation is your problem. I have known old cars to actually rust INSIDE the sump and on the dipstick

If it doesn't seem to be running hot or losing water i'd take it for a run (any excuse) and get if up to temp to evaporate off any water that has gathered in the oil. Id definately try that first
