O.K people, I have a question.

My Anglia is a 1961 105e Deluxe, it is (should) be fitted with a 997cc Kent pre x-flow lump, & has 45000 genuine miles on the clock. While I was giving it a new lease of life after it's 20 year hibenation, I went to buy a new oil filter. What I found out, started to make me wonder.

The original oil filter should be a replacable unit, but it should be enclosed in a metal cylinder, not the later disposable screw on cartridge type. To my amazment, it has been fitted with a Kent x-flow oil pump & filter.

Why???? I ask myself. The water pump doesn't look that old either. (Well, it is at least 20 years old, obviously changed before it came off the road) My dad has had a look at the engine, and he says he can't remember them being painted from new, if they were they were black. My one has 2 coats of green paint. The first coat is a light green, and the second is a dark green which is flaking off.

My dad also said he had a new/newish Anglia many years ago and the engine detonated at 6000 miles (Conrod came through block). He spoke to my Uncle the other day and asked him, he said from memory, he thought a Ford recon lump was green, and originals were black, can anyone confirm this for me please????????

If it has been changed, I wonder for what reason. I am not happy with the noises that it is making, and have a feeling something isn't quite right, and if it turns out not to be the right engine, I think I will have to modify and make it go faster :lol::lol::lol:

Any help will be greatly appreciated :D:D:D

Well mate, I have a nice top end rattle i.e Tappets, but my dad said that is normal, very much a case of "A noisy tappet is a happy tappet" but that isn't to much of a problem - YET.

I have also got some mild groaning as well. I know this may be big or main ends, but there is something I just can't put my finger on. I know she is 45 years old and she isn't going to drive or sound like my Capri, but there is just something I am not happy with.

If it turns out not to be the right lump, I am thinking of going to a 1.3 Kent x-flow. What do you recon????

HI Jim-bob

Get your feeler gauges out and set those tappets properly, if its rattling its not running the right gap and therefore you could be loosing valuable horses... ;)

As for detonation resulting in a rod coming out the side of the block, I think thats a little bit of memory clouded by time.

Rods leaving the block, or 'putting a leg out of bed' is nearly always caused by oil starvation, its not caused by the timing being a few degrees out.

If you havent already, then treat the old girl to some of the best 20/50w oil you can find, set the tappets and see how she goes.

If you have a spin on filter then the oil pump has been changed for some reason, there may have been a problem with the original and this could have either caused a failure at some point in the past, hence the non-black engine block or there could have been some damage to bearings due to low oil pressure and thats what the groaning is now.

Alternatively you've got some crap oil in it thats too thin.

I wouldnt fit a 1300 crossflow as a replacement, I'd go for a 1500 pre-crossflow as its an easier swap and its more power ;)

Cheers for your help people

Yo Neil, I did do the tappets which did quieten it down a bit as it was a noisy bugger, but there is still a regular loud tap. Sounds like just one tappet, unless it could be a timing chain prob. I have put some decent oil in there, can't remember what now though, but I will invest in some of that Valvoline for it's next sevice. :D

I was thinking 1500 pre x-flow, but arent these engines getting hard to find now? A mate of mine had a really nice one that we pulled out of a 1960's boat. It hadn't long since been rebuilt, but he left it in the back of his van, then decided to get the van disposed of without taking it out

I have a carb problem to look at in the mean time, so I will get my spanners out and see how it goes, and I will have to search for the engine number as well :roll:

CheeRS again peeps :D

a 1500 is no harder to find than a front drop sump and oil pickup from a MkII Cortina to get your Crossflow in there.

Then you have to dick about with engine mounts as the crossflow block is wider on the exhaust side to a pre-crossflow so you have to slot the engine mount and or crossmember mounting holes.

The original throttle linkage will have to be replaced with cable, then you have the issue of Sprung vs Diaphragm clutch to content with and bearing spacers etc etc

SO...

I'd keep an eye out for a 1500 if I was you.

Or even a 1340cc Classic engine, or a 1300 Pre-crossflow from a MkII Cortina, Ultra Rare... but a nice thing to have.
