caprifan Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 ..why Oh why must my car fight me every step ..has anyone else had an issue of the front hubs not wanting to come off the stub on the front struts ??? I thought they were a little tight going on but tried to get them off yesterday....oh hangon they don't want to come off end up I needed a club hammer to get the first off a few hard taps no problem.......the other side.......in the end I am taking full swings to get the fecker off.....now the hub is battered to shit and now to top it off my brand new bearing has come apart leaving the inner piece still on the stub AAARRRGGHHHHHH FOOKING CAR so now I need new hubs and bearings which add to my woes and ideas on how the fook to get the bit of bearing off without King up my new expensive strut...ideas welcome....
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 Chris, get yourself a 3 leg puller. It will be off in a jiffy. The trouble with bearings is, they need to have equal pressure all the way round and not on one side at a time. A puller is the way to go my man
caprifan Posted October 30, 2006 Author Report Posted October 30, 2006 do you mean for the hub or the shell thats left on the stub....I don't know if there is enough room to get a puller leg behind it...I'll get a photo tonight....
Admin Mk2Jo Posted October 30, 2006 Admin Report Posted October 30, 2006 Stop moaning and just get on with it

Gibson Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 gentle application of heat with a heatgun too the bearing casing and gentle tapping with a rubber mallet...
Tom Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 gimme a shout mate, i'll pop round and get it off . . . . . . and the bearing race
deluxe Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 you can drift the bearing shells out but take care so you dont hit the cast iron they sit in
caprifan Posted October 30, 2006 Author Report Posted October 30, 2006 ...well here is whats left on the strut............. Tom if you can help me out that would be superb and a real favour...let me know bud
runty176 Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 carefully slice through the shell casing with angle grinder . not all the way through to the stub . then split it with a chisel . will come off easy
caprifan Posted October 30, 2006 Author Report Posted October 30, 2006 I have to be honest I don't want to get a grinder anywhere near the stub...A I don't trust my grinding ability...ie none...and B if I slipped and fooked the stub I simply couldn't afford to replace it (Gaz coilover) ....you can see where I battered the fook outta the hub on the strut casing.....I think I have done enough damage....
runty176 Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 next then would be to heat it up a little (just the shell casing) then drift it off with a chisel . If you have a welder crank it up high and run a weld in the middle of the casing . this will heat it up enough to drift it off . but the grinder will be fine just take it carefully
BIGKEV Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 Gutted dude - although I have no clue what your all on about
capriclive Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 sharp chisel between bearing race and hub. WILL move. done it loads of times.
fezza Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 Gutted dude - although I have no clue what your all on about hpoe you get it sorted m8
Awesome Al Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 All the above should shift it, or if you have a welder & a slide hammer, weld two L shaped bits of steel either side of the race, conecet to the slide hammer then- Tah dar.
caprifan Posted October 30, 2006 Author Report Posted October 30, 2006 unfortunately at the moment I don't have a welder or pullers or anything remotely useful.....guess I will be buying some pullers
Tom Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 take the caliper and carrier off mate, is the car outside yours? i'll prob take an 'extended' road test and pop round
