Seals2 Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 hi old skoolers. ive almost got all me bits to restore the car but i was wondering about how much bhp/torque will a english axle take?
Mk 1 Mark Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Depends on what size tryes and how much grip you have, But a normal 6x13 or 7 x 13 wheel/tyre combo axle should handle 200 bhp all day long on the road, But once you start doing trackdays or taking it to the pod, And you put slicks on it and launch it that you start doing shafts and diffs ect But i know of some people that have used anglis axles as there shorter and slighty stronger But you can upgrade the shafts to 2 piece quaife Items which is what i did
MK2Ed Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 But you can upgrade the shafts to 2 piece quaife Items which is what i did Me too which worked fine so far... This was with slicks, hard launches, straight line and 160 BHP... Whether or not the English handles my new engine and slicks and the odd trackday remains to be seen...
Toby Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Lead to believe the standard diameter 2 piece shafts aren't any better than standard shafts, you need a tran-x diff with the large side gears to fit the thicker shafts ideally. I broke lots of standard shafts with in the region of 160-180 hp on slicks at the pod. I upgraded to thick shafts - no problems. The CWP seems to get noisey though so I guess it doesn't love the power. Trouble is an Atlas is pretty heavy in comparrison!
RWDmad Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 put a pair of quaife 2 piece halfshafts in it
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Trouble is an Atlas is pretty heavy in comparrison! Yes foooooooooooking heavy and too fooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooking expensive . £2500 for a decent one and £4000 for a top notch dogs bolloxs one with all the bits

Seals2 Posted January 12, 2008 Author Report Posted January 12, 2008 well im looking on a engine with around the 180 - 200bhp. possible cossie na also guys 5speed type 9 ok to run on a cossie if i decide that root?
Toby Posted January 12, 2008 Report Posted January 12, 2008 I would have thought so, but I think the ratios are better in the cossy box, but it's bigger so tunnel mods required
Seals2 Posted January 12, 2008 Author Report Posted January 12, 2008 isn't the cossie box well heavy tho?
Toby Posted January 12, 2008 Report Posted January 12, 2008 isn't the cossie box well heavy tho? Yeah but with 200 hp you wont care! (sorry mate not very helpfull. I'm sure someone cleavererer will be along soon - treat my replys more like bumps )

It is the 18 you want with the big side gears in either a tran-x diff or a quaife ATB (not my choice) as they unlock if you lift a wheel, other people will tell you different though. All I know is I run the Tran-x and haven't broken a shaft yet. The tran-x diffs are a bit noisey and harsh in operation though when crawling round a car park you'd wonder if there's something wrong. Quaife call the shaft an Atlas Group 1 Halfshaft 18t The other alternative is the fully floating stuff but that is expensive and widens the rear track I think.
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 It will be interesting to see how your axle stands up Gaz, I assume you're on an English - what you got? Yes mate , stock 1100 shafts with a quaffie A.T.B. slipper . Not broken them yet in 23 years of driving mk1 escorts . Going to upgrade to gp1 shafts and big diff side gears later if they break though

dragaddict Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 the english axle holds power very well,i ran 9.8's with it with fiat shafts in it

Guest MK1gaz Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 6 years of sprints and hillclimbs,186bhp,slick tyres, lsd, never had a moments problem. happy days
Toby Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 im hoping to put between 200 and 300bhp through my capri on next year and im told it should cope with it... just Turbos are a bit more progresive on the power delivery so you may be ok! (Assuming that's how you're going to find 300hp ) The trouble with not having strong stuff in my experience is that you get to the meet, where you have for example at Pod, paid £40+ in petrol to get there, £10 to get in £20 to sign on, and then throw all that money down the drain for a Saturday spent under your axle spunking money on gear oil and gaskets. Do that 10 times and you might have well of bought the stuff you now dont own but have paid for!
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 Very true Toby . Can you lend me £3000 for a pucker atlas axle then ?
