Trevmk3 Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Had to buy one as the one im using at the moment is being a twat and it gets delivered tomorrow so i wont be on until we get everything sorted anyone know if i can link the hard drive from this piece of poo too my new computer so i can keep my photos as i havnt enough CDRW's to transfer them all Cheers
flyingbanana Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 yes you can transfer them...but your current hard drive will have windows still installed, what you need to do is change the jumper setting on the hard drive to slave or cable select for the new pc to boot up correctly and see the hard drive, then you can swap everything over once booted up and once swapped everything over you can format the old hard drive
Copey Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 ^^ sod all that, too much of a pain in the arse!! take the old hard drive out of your old PC buy one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-2-0-3-5-Exter ... dZViewItem stick the hard drive in it and plug it into the USB on your new PC bobs your uncle!!
flyingbanana Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 maybe a pain in the arse but the usb stuff is quite slow...plus he needs the correct box for his old hard drive...could be either be ata,sata...if its a old pc it will prob have a ata hard drive...new pc's will normally have Sata drives

Trevmk3 Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 the PC we are using at the moment is about 5 years old, all i need to do is get some of my stuff off the old and onto the new in the least complicated way possible thanks for the suggestions think i will have to break my way into the old one (so to speak) and see what the crack is

Copey Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 you not got a USB memory stick?? transfer onto that then onto the new pc??
Copey Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 if you do it my way it just works like any other USB memory device you put in
Trevmk3 Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 not got a memory stick, we do get a free 2 GB one but for saying weve got about 30Gb to transfer it might be easier to use a link up cable. dont mind if it is a bit slower to access as it will still probably be quicker than this junk im using Thankyou for the advice lads
flyingbanana Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 if you do it copeys way you will need to correct box for your old hard drive!. 2 different types of connections. ata drive has to be connected to a ide cable like this, which will be in your old PC box for sure, the dvd drives also connect to this type of ide lead then the newer pc will except the ata or sata drives...both have different connections sata cable looks like this....i suspect your new pc will have sata drives internally so make sure you get the correct box for your old hard drive....or just plug into your ide cable on your new PC,and doing what i mentioned above
Trevmk3 Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 thanks for the pics of the cables mr nana will see how it goes
