MK5 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Went to start the Cortina this morning... battery was dead as a dead thing Brought it in to charge it... and there was no acid inside it... not a drop... So where did it go? Car was fine yesterday - did about 30 miles in total, just pottering about... So if anyone finds my acid can I have it back please
johnny_h Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Probably kids. Was there an all night rave nearby at the time?
Muttley MK2 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Check your charging rate. Should be no more than 13.8 volts. If it is it will boil the battery and ther goes yer acid!
MK5 Posted February 20, 2008 Author Report Posted February 20, 2008 in girly terms can you please explain how i do that. thanks
Toby Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 in girly terms can you please explain how i do that. thanks Make a nice cup of tea for the bloke who'll do it for you!! Sorry couldn't resist.
Toby Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Just put a volt meter on the battery terminals with the car running. Forgiven?
Toby Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Fit a new battery first though! Or top your old one up, although it's probably buggered now.
MK5 Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 i have borrowed a battery from work to test the car with will fit a new one when i'm sure the alternator is ok
M.Bird412E Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 It depends how low the acid level is....... You can top it up with destilled water avaliable from Halfrauds!
Pipster007 Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 When people keep asking about LSD, is this what they mean
MK5 Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 alternator is buggered and is boiling the battery. has done it to test battery... anyone have a 45amp alternator for a mk5 Cortina going spare...?
Rick Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 didnt think you could overcharge a battery if you dont have any distilled water piss in it
FredTransit Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 didnt think you could overcharge a battery if you dont have any distilled water piss in it Yes you can, had it on a transit once. The charging light doesn't go out, but dims if you switch everything on. If the tina is a pinto you can still get the alternators new (recon) over the counter. Also, distilled water can be made from the ice in your freezer, just cip it off and melt it.
