I think thats wrong mate, one of my mates has a scooby and the other an integrs, both imports and both failed mot on cats/emmisions, luckily it was sorted without having to fook round with new cats etc :D but if you don't have any 'special' mot testing friends it's gonna be a pain in the arse getting it mot'd :?:?

not true mate ,

i had to keep my cat for mot time on my evo .

it will be especially bad now that the computerised test has came in . i think jap motors over a certain age could get a bit leeway but not so much now . .

a little tip though , before going for the test take the car for a blast along the motor way to get it properly heated up and to make sure everything is running through the exhuast ok

depends if there import only. my R32 was only available through import and wasnt listed on the new computer.

so what they have to do is tell the computer its a 2.0 litre with carbs, you can imagine the leeway i had with that, so it passed.

but all cars must have a cat.

what car is it steve???

not true mate im afraid, however some imports dont have any registered figures for what test they should be taking until well after they were first being imported,

for example my freind can get away with No cat on his mr2 turbo import (on J plates) because the regulations for them were not registered in the uk until 96 (around p plates)

I think that answers the question m8, thanks

I have also been told that NO cars HAVE to have a cat as long as they can pass the emissions test (which is almost impossible without one  )

Its on my Toymota m8

One of our trade customers at work imported himself an S15 silvia. It needs to pass an SVA test so he can get it registered....but the emissions wont go low enough even with the CAT fitted :?

If its any use then I can try and get hold of a copy of the flowcharts from the MOT manual tomorrow if its any use? That should help you work out exactly what emission limits the car has to comply to.

Thanks m8 but don't worry to much, I'll probably wait till after mot time then make something up thats replacable for the next mot as it looks like I'm going to need a cat

The infomation came from someone I know that works in an mot shop. They had a jap import in for mot without a cat. He asked the mot man 'doesn't that need a cat to pass the test' to which the tester replyed 'no cos its an import' :? Maybe I should take the car there

mine hasnt got a cat and it passed, because all 32's are import only so they dont come up on the computer.

gibson explained it nicely, if the car wasnt in the country then it wont come up on the computer until the car was first registered here.

get a de-cat steve. you wont believe how must power it unlocks when you bin it!

im pretty sure it will have to stay for the MOT.

must clear up what i said before, not all cars must have a cat to pass MOT, if its pre 1992(march i think)you can remove it and it will be ok, plus all cars that are import only, and all cars that were import only up until the date when there were made here.

buy a de cat, they sell em on ebay for about 40quid, whatever you do DO NOT bash all the baffle from the cat cos your gonna need it for next year. ive known a friend to do that and he had to shell out a few hundred for a cat the next year.

Fair enough mate, De-cat pipes probably best , at least that way you dont have to worry if you ever do need the cat in the future.

Yep I think your right. I thought it was strange what he was telling me as i'd never heard it before, hence why I asked on here.

If everyone said 'yeah you don't need a cat on a import' than it would of been off asap.

When i replaced my exhaust system on the 200 (s13 1993) the mongoose system i fitted, did nt have a cat, and that passed its MOT ok earlier this year, but my car is nt an import, does that make any difference? :D

Had a look in the test manual for you. Basically, if it was first used between 01/08/92 and 31/07/95 then unless you can find an EXACT match for the engine code in the emissions book(which you might not being an import) it has to comply with the old limits ( 3.5% CO and 1200ppm HC max). If its First used after 01/08/95 then it has stricter limits to comply with (Basically it'll need a CAT).

if yours is a turbo steve then it will be the 3SGTE engine, same as the MR2's which were first made in 1989, so you might be able to wangle it somehow using that info if what emu said is right.

some cars will go threw a cat test without a cat on anyway.... but gotta be running exactly right for that....
